Prior to administering anything, homeopathic or conventional to anyone's diet, pets especially, we feel that personal health history must be considered, and a medical professional should be consulted. There are many instances where even the most "harmless" additive has had contraindications and caused more harm than good. We believe everyone here is responsible and understands that, but it is important to re-state. This is a public forum, viewable by guests as well as members, and is cataloged by most search engines.

Druid College of Healing

Postby Aigeann » 17 May 2007, 22:37

The Druid College of Healing is open to OBOD members who have any experience or knowledge in the healing arts.

It's basically a forum for healers to share experiences and information, and also add their expertise (articles) to the "college library".  Out of it, we're hoping to eventually do a set gwers and/or a book on Druid Healing.

If you are a member of OBOD, please pm Fitheach to let her know you are interested and why you feel you are qualified.

I have noticed that the link from http://healing.druidry.org/ to this discussion forum is broken, it still points to the old board. It is one of the buttons on the left.

I would most humbly like to contribute. I have 26 years experience in the emergency medical field. I also teach on the subject here in the US.I strongly believe in the value of homeopathic, folk and conventional medicine. I have recently completed the Bardic Grade and am looking forward to the Ovate studies.

Good Health and Many Blessings to you all.

The helpful kitchen cupboard....

Commonly available ingredients for health and healing?

Garlic, Honey, Onion, Oregano, etc.

No co-incidence, I'd say, that common culinary herbs are also beneficial appetite stimulants, carminatives and digestive bitters, alimentary and urinary antiseptics etc. Those ancient shamen-chefs really knew their stuff! :handsoff: :cauldron:

Greetings fair folk,

I am just started to learn about herbs and the healing properties. Any advice on which links, websites or books or practical know how would be most appricitated.

So far I have Coltsfoot, Fennel, Mugwort and St Johns Wort hanging up and some in dry format. What I want to be able to do is to harvest my own herbs and hang them to dry, but my kitchen is very cold. Any ideas?

I've heard of some people successfully drying herbs in the oven using very low heat.

I wonder if you could experiment with that?

What about making them into tinctures or salves instead?

Keep your bundles loose when you hang them in a colder environment--the more surface area that you expose the better your drying effect and you are less likely to get mold. Drying at cooler temps usually preserves more of the volatile constituents, I think that your fennel and mugwort will benefit from that.

If you have a gas oven, the pilot light will often produce enough heat to accomplish this--it may take several days--so, if you want to use the oven for anything else...

If you have an electric oven you can pre-heat it to "warm" (that's 150 degrees F on my oven) and then turn it off and leave the herbs, loosely bundled inside overnight. Depending on the moisture it may take two to four consecutive nights. You can hang the herbs outside of the oven during the day. This method is a little harder on the more volatile constituents, but will still get you an end result that is better than most of what you buy in any store.

We are loving spring right now and wildcrafting like mad :yay: Being in the desert of the southwest US, we don't have the problem with being too cool right now, we are in the time crunch of getting everything dried before it gets too hot.

I hope that this is helpful :shake:
Have a wonderful day!!

Many thanks for your ideas !

I will certainly try the open bundles with my cold kitchen as I think that will work. Your idea of try tinctures and salves.. never thought of that. Great thanks!
I shall keep my eyes on this page in case any other little gems of info happen to be shown here.

Enjoy the Spring buddings.

if your going to be drying lots of herbs and plants try making a box 24"sq and 4' tall put a small 25 Watt light in it at the bottom ,, line it with foil and get some oven racks to lay the plants on ,dont mix the plants, drill a small hole in the front door and put a cooking thermometer in it to track the temp,, work out a hole and plug at the bottom and hole and cover on top to bring in cool air and vent off heat

Interesting - ok will try that as soon as i am able.
I just purchased Sage, Fennel, Tyme and Rosmary from a local grow garden. Looking forward to seeing how they get on. At least I know that they dont have traffic pollution which was my main worry. If I can cultivate from these young plants, I will try my hand at growing them from seed. But for now, I will walk before I can fly :D

Safe paths all.
Willow.

I've come upon this rather late, I'm afraid, but I just wanted to know if this 'College of Healing' exists now? I have over 10 years of complementary healing experience.
Due to the fact that there's no search facility here, I can't seem to find it. :)
