Does anyone have any experience with recurrent hives? My daughter has been getting them almost every day for about 6 weeks. They pop up out of nowhere & then disappear in about 10-15 minutes with or without any meds.
Last Novemeber she was diagnosed with ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura) but after treatment for that has been OK since then. She is extremely stressed lately (1 year anniversary of her dad's death, college finals this week, upcoming surgery next week....) so I tend to think that they are stress induced.
Any ideas?!

Hi Sue,
I tend to agree with you based on what you have written, about stress being the most likely cause of your daugther's recurrent hives but I am no expert. Another possible cause could be an allergy to something but lets hope these hives will cease altogether in a few weeks time when life is less stressful for your daugther - will send some healing energy to you both

Thanks for the thoughts & healing energy.
We have have tried to think of anything that may be an allergen but can't come up with anything that is new or different around her. The one thing that seems to make it happen more is heat so she's trying to be aware of that. Who knows...
Hopefully once her surgery is done & she's home from school tucked up on the couch with the kitties she'll be better!

Is she on IVIG treatment for the ITP? If so, one of the side effects can be hives and allergic reaction in general. Having said that, I've definitely experienced the old stress-induced hives condition.
Oatmeal baths can be really soothing, especially if it's short-term. An Ayurvedic technique I've used is Cilantro paste (assuming she's not allergic to it). Blend fresh Cilantro with a bit of water in a blender - you want a pulpy paste - and apply it to the hives. The cooling nature of the paste should help. Patch test one small bit of skin first just to make sure she doesn't react to the cilantro at all.

She never had to get the IVIG treatment since her ITP resolved spontaneously. Actually we found that she is IgA deficient so she can't have the standard treatment if the ITP comes back.
I've never heard of the cilantro paste which seems like a great idea but unfortunately she can't stand the stuff! It's always an issue when I cook because I love it . I don't think she could stand to have it on her.....
Oatmeal baths are a great idea & not just for the relief from the oatmeal but a bath in itself is always a stress reducer
I think once finals & the surgery are over the whole situation may resolve.
