The Mists of Avalon

Postby Druid Faqir » 10 Oct 2008, 16:03

Blessings to you all!
I don't know if this wonderfull movie has been mentioned here. If this topic is redundant, remove it please. "The Mists of Avalon" is available on YouTube, courtesy of historygirl23.
Just type in the title add "part 1" and work your way through from there. It is deffinitely worth watching! :)
I just wish I had the book(s) by Marion Zimmer Bradley, on which the movie is based....
Hope you'll enjoy it!

The book is great!
One of those I will read again.
Marion Zimmer Bradley is definitely one of my favorite writers :) .

I have not seen the movie based on it.
Thank you so much for the information. :shake:

As someone who has been a victim of online piracy of my work...

Please keep in mind that whoever posted it is probably violating all kinds of copyright laws and depriving the script writers, MZB's estate, and anyone else involved with the movie of income from royalties.

Just sayin'. :old:

Sorry to hear that LadyCelt :-( .

I was thinking about renting the DVD from Love Film though :) .

It was just so nice to know that there is a film about it.

I love the film and have the DVD in my collection! It isn't completely faithful to the book, IMO, but still enjoyable. :)

I thought Angelica Houston was a fab Vivienne. But its not a patch on the book. I've often wondered what the likes of Peter Jackson, director of Lord Of The Rings would do to it?

I've read the book and seen the film, but still prefer the mystery of imagination that the book itself creates. The film was good, but sometimes can warp the first hand book impression.

I've also read the other two books in this triology - excellent work and makes "Mists of Avalon" even more enjoyable.

It's been a while since I watched this but, IIRC, the first part held my attention rather well while the second part seemed a bit of a mess.

It's an entertainment movie, not as good as the book, specially the ending part goes to much appart in a style I don't like too much. As for piracy, as it's not available in my local bluckbuster and I had not intention of buying a movie I've never saw, I use the internet. I like it and maybe will buy the DVD, not sure for now.

I loved both the book and the film! Though I have to admit that I also prefer forming the story in my imagination. Still I find it really worthwhile to devote an evening or rainy afternoon to review the movie every once in a while. As for the book, strange as it is, somehow I've never finished the final 50 pages.. No idea why not, because I find it one of the most beautiful books I ever (almost) read. I have read it several times as well, but than always some other book found it's way to my bedside table, pushing "The Mists" to the background again. Someday, however, I will finish it!

Blessings,

I love 'The Mists of Avalon' (actually its my bedside reading at the moment). I recomment reading 'The Forests of Avalon' and 'Lady of Avalon'. Both books take place before 'The Mists of Avalon'. Especially in 'Lady of Avalon' you can learn more of the daily routine of a priestess and there are described some rituals, too.

Thank you for this recommendation. I will check these books out.

I LOVE THE BOOK The Mists of Avalon. This was the book I read in college and first triggered my mind into wandering down this path. I even remember the statement, although not verbatim. It was something one of the Druids said to a Christian: How can one worship God in a house built by man?

That sentence took my breath away--it was what I believed, but had not heard from any other source before. That was over 20 years ago for me. I've read the book several times. Now I think I need to read it again now that I've officially gone on the path of Druidry.

The movie was good (I own the DVD), but the book was amazing! If you've only seen the movie, then treat yourself to the book.

Peace!
Believe me, I've been hoping to get my hands on it ever since I first saw the movie (a few months ago)...
How can man worship God in a house built by man?

Impressive indeed...

I'm going to make myself (more?) unpopular now by admitting that I really truly hate this book!

I love the Arthurian legends, but I can't stand how this series of books takes liberties with the stories in a way that to me seems to subvert or disrespect the tradition. I've got no problem with modern rewrites, or even re-interpretations, but IMO these are better if done in a sensitive way that develops existing strands in the narritive, bringing out elements that are below the surface or changing things in a way that adds meaning. I'd cite Boorman's Excalibur film, and John Steinbeck's reworking of the legend as examples of how it can be done, making artistic and creative changes whilst staying within the 'stream' of the original naratives.

Too many people seem to have their entire knowledge (or should that be misinformation?) about the Matter of Britain from the contents of MofA and that is sad when there is so much amiss with that book.

Plus its also a tedious slog, typically bloated American novel (do they sell books by weight in the US?). I hated all the characters, the terrible wimpy and unsympathetic male leads (hello...these are Heroes) and the ludicrously Mills and Boon type females who seem to spend all their time whining. It even manages to taint the genuine, truly touching and beautiful romance between Lancelot and Guinevere as portrayed in Chretien de Troyes 'Knight of the Cart'.

There I've said it, you can start throwing stuff at me now! :duck:

Peace!
Now I've heard of negative reviews but...this? :boggle:
Oh, well...you can't make veryone happy, though I must admit I myself don't undestand why on earth the author had to put the whole menage-a-troi thing in there...kinda spoills a perfecly inspiring movie/book  . That's about the only thing I had to complain about...Are y'all gonna throw things at me too? :duck: lol!

Well I don't hate neither the book nor the movie, but I agree with Corwen that is totally a "poetic licence" and in no ways reflect the historical reality of the pre-Christian and proto-Christian Britain. Readers/Viewers have to take into account that is all fiction based on a legend, and not to take it as historical fact.

As we say in German: "Tasts are different." and "You can't argue about tast."

No need to throw with things or to argue. Life is much more colorful with many different oppinions.

Of course I see TMoA as fiction. I never thought that somebody could take that story for real! I mean, I love "Gone with the wind", too, but I wouldn't believe that that story was real. Same thing with the Mists of Avalon.
