For anyone interested in Crows Rooks Ravens and Magpies can I recommend Corvus A Life with Birds By Ester Woolfston This Scottish lady shares her house with these birds and it is full of information and a very touching story about the relationship between Corvids and Humans.

"Giants of the Frost" by Kim Wilkins - a great lternative reading of the pantheon of Norse gods who meet the modern scientific meteorological community on an isolated island off the Norwegian coast! Oh, and a love story thrown in cause I am a sucker for a romance with a twist!

"Living Druidry" Emma Restall Orr - I never really put any of her books down :awen:

"The Real Middle Earth" Brian bates - good to dip in and out of when you have a spare evening to ponder.

Now... about Pracchett.... I take it he is good?

"The Year of the Flood" - Margaret Atwood

Excerpt from page 14, (I'm not giving anything vital away) I thought this oddly appropriate and wanted to share:

"When Adam first had breath of life
All in that golden place,
He dwelt in peace with Bird and Beast,
And knew God face to face.

Man's Spirit first went forth in speech
To Name each Creature dear;
God called to all in Fellowship
They came without a fear.

They romped in play, and sang, and flew -
Each motion was a praise
For God's great Creativity
That filled those early days.

How shrunk, how dwindled, in our times
Creation's mighty seed -
For Man has broke the Fellowship
With murder, lust, and greed.

Oh Creatures dear, that suffer here,
How may we Love restore?
We'll Name you in our inner Hearts,
and call you Friend once more."

Christ of the Celts and The Pagan Christ...
The sounds of the winds in the elms
like the strings of a harp being played,
the note of the blackbird that claps
with the wings of delight in the glade.

My most recent companion is Anam Cara.
I am trying to find some sense of belonging and balance this book seems to be helping.
The copy I have is a 'Tribute Edition' it is beautifully made and a complete joy just to hold.

Blessings,

Two things on the go at the moment (sign of a divided mind?) :

1. "Hidden Nature: The Startling Insights of Viktor Schauberger" by Alick Bartholomew

Reveals the incredible theories of Schauberger, the so-called Water Wizard, who understood so much about the properties and nature of water, and how to harness its powers.

2. "Spirals: The Patterns of Existence" by Geoff Ward

Shows that spirals have been the universal pattern within Nature from antiquity through to the present day. Explains the power of labyrinths, earth energies and ritual magic through their employment of the spiral form.

Both these books are enhancing my appreciation of Nature and the ways of working with her power. Wonderful Winter research!

Is it really that good, Kernos? I thoroughly enjoy the Sandman saga, but I'm a graphic novel geek anyway. I keep meaning to pick up some of Gaiman's literary fiction... I just never get around to it!

It really blew me away, Plaidcat. I think Gaiman is one of the most creative geniuses of the last 2 decades, based on this book and the movies/tv he has been with. I am not much of a reviewer, but these are my comments on http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/1454379

The Gods are feeding me awen! This book has been on my physical TBR shelves for 4 years. Having just finished Neuromancer last nite , I needed a new book and chose this among several hundred waiting patiently.

What a fabulous hoot! Especially after just watching Hogfather on DVD and resurrecting Pratchett's God's trilogy. I an being pushed in a direction by unseen forces, it seems. This will be my 1st read. I recognize a lot of 'obscure' allusions, but miss many, many more, I'm sure, that I want to look up so much, I could not really enjoy the book. I also really like the obvious cultural effects of his being a British-American.

Definitely the best fantasy of the decade. This will take several re-readings. Next time I will have wikipedia and a quote notebook at hand.

"Liberty is a bitch who must be bedded on a mattress of corpses."

"...opiates have become the religion of the masses"

When finished, I ordered all his other novels. I have not looked at Sandman, mainly because I have trouble with graphic novels— just didnt grow up with them.

Well, excellent. I will certainly put him higher in my queue.

You should try out the Sandman novels. They're graphically intense (lots of colors, psychedelic imagery), but with a simple 1980s art style. Unfortunately, unlike TPBs, graphic novels are NOT CHEAP. They run $13-16 a book, because they're large and printed in full color. I did definitely grow up with sequential art as a storytelling medium (Its one of my personally preferred methods of storytelling), but I think its easy enough to pick up; that's why they're popular with kids!
