2005 LUGHNASADH/IMBOLC CRAFTS ENTRIES

Postby Crow » 09 Jun 2005, 15:07

Notice: Includes three-dimensional objects crafted by hand, such as wands, staves, athames, jewelry, etc., but excluding sculpture. Generally speaking, craft items would be used for some purpose, as opposed to art created to be viewed. Please post your craft entries for the current Eisteddfod here.

This is a Birch walking stick that first found me while as a branch floating down the Mississippi River. It was waterlogged and still had it's bark. I took it home with me, let it dry out naturally for several months, then using a pocketknife, carefully removed the bark. I initially sanded it with 120 grit sandpaper. Each letter was then burned into the wood freehanded using a woodburning iron, then enlayed with walnut. Each letter took about two hours to complete from start to finish, and then was handsanded using 220 grit sandpaper, then the entire stick was sanded with 320 grit sandpaper all by hand. It then recieved four layers of high gloss polyurethane, applied by hand, then sanding by hand between each layer of poly with 500 grit emery sandpaper, and then tacked with cheesecloth to remove any particles of dust. The handle was wrapped with ribbon and hot glued into place to conform with the grip of my hand. The length is about fifty two (52) inches, and one and seven eighths (1-7/8) to one (1) inch across. This is the finished result.

This walking stick is Diamond Willow, and came to me in raw form all the way from Fairbanks Alaska. Raw form means that it still had it's bark inplace and the ends needed to be trimmed. I removed the bark with a drawknife; took a few hours to do correctly. I then used a Dremel in some places to enhance the diamonds and remove the bark. That took awhile too. I then handsanded the entire stick with 120 grit sandpaper to help smooth things. After that, I chose a 220 grit sandpaper on the main body of the stick to knockdown any rough areas. I put four layers of high gloss polyurethane by hand on the entire length, sanding with 400 grit emery sandpaper between each layer, and tacking with cheesecloth so as to remove any sawdust from the sandings. I drilled a hole through the top and tied a piece of rawhide for a wristband. The stick is approximately fifty nine (59) inches in length, and one and three quarters (1-3/4) inches to one (1) inch across.

A three piece Brazillian Cherry coffee and matching end tables. I completed these for my wife's Mother's Day present. They are made from one (1) inch thick stock. It took approximatley sixty (60) board feet of lumber to produce for all three pieces. The lumber was rough cut when I recieved it and had to be planed down to smooth. There is absolutely no metal fasteners on any of these pieces. Everything is either put together with mortis and tennon joints or wood dowels. All sanding and finish work was done by hand. The demensions of the coffee table are: five (5) foot long by twenty two and one half (22-1/2) inches wide by seventeen (17) inches tall. It weighs about fifty five (55) pounds. The demensions of each end table are: two (2) foot long by nineteen and one half (19-1/2) inches wide by twenty two (22) inches tall. Each weighs about thirty five (35) pounds. All three pieces are finished in five (5) layers of high gloss polyurethane that was applied by hand and was sanded between layers with 400 grit emery sandpaper and tacked with cheesecloth to remove and dust or sawdust. A Roman Ogee edge was put on every side of the tops. Here are the pictures.

Obsidian projectile points - Entry

Postby Jeb » 04 Jul 2005, 13:55

Entry

I knapped these several years ago for an experimental archaeology class. They are reasonably close replicas of projectile points found in the PPNB strata at Jericho, Israel. The originals would be somewhere around 8 or 9 thousand years old.

The point on the far right is the prize piece of the collection, the culmination of months of practice on cheap chert and broken glass bottles. Obsidian is nice to work with but let me tell you... even the junk flakes are razor sharp!

A VERY brief blurb on the ancient history of Jericho

All are very impressive works. This will be a difficult decision for sure.

At the end of the page you can see what I´m presenting for the Eisteddfod. An altar image of the Morrigan that I bought in Glastonbury. Originally it was painted in black/copper, but she was yelling for a new look, so i took out the old paint and maked her up again. Now she looks like a true Warrior Goddess.

Crow, can you take the image and post it? I´ve been trying but I couldn´t.

:hiya:

[Scylla, Crow's on vacation so I took care of it for you. :selene:]
