2005 SAMHUINN/BELTANE CRAFTS ENTRIES

Postby Crow » 22 Sep 2005, 15:41

Notice: Includes three-dimensional objects crafted by hand, such as wands, staves, athames, jewelry, etc., but excluding sculpture. Generally speaking, craft items would be used for some purpose, as opposed to art created to be viewed. Please post your craft entries for the current Eisteddfod here.

ENTRY:

Harvest Pentacle

Image

I made this Pentacle from Salt Dough:
Equal amounts of plain flour and kitchen salt are mixed with water - keep kneading and adding water until you get a workable dough. I have noticed that it does not store - it gets kind of watery even overnight.
Part of the dough was colored with finely ground coffee.
The apples are made with cloves for the stems and the "flies" ('s what we call it in german)....
The items can be baked in a 100°C oven (for a few hours) or left to air-dry for a week or more.

the little brown globs are walnuts and the broomstick-like things are ears of grain....

I think together with the ingredients used, this motif is a very earthy thing. It now hangs over my bedroom door.
bright blessed days, dark sacred nights

Druidic Journal
It's my druidic journal :)
Image
Image
It was a simple, very thick notebook, which I binded and embroidered.
The tree is embroidered on a maroon velvet which is sewed in with golden thread into the dark green velvet. This golden circle is a symbol of the Sun ( adding all this what a circle symbolizes). Around the tree there are symbols of the Elements with natural representations of them around the golden circle ( feather - the Air, fiery stones (carnelian, garnet, citrine and orange jade) - the Fire, shell- the Water, green nefrite - the Earth). Inside the circle there are also four phases of the Moon - Full Moon (round mother of pearl), waning moon ( embroidered with silver thread), Dark Moon (with onyx) and crescent Moon. In leaves surrounding the circle there are carnelians and little ambers :) I did bookmarks also - one with clear quartz attached to the end and the second with green agate.
It was great challenge for me, because I'm not skilled in embroidering and I'm very impatient person
I have showed it already some time ago in "Arts and Crafts".

Here's a bookshelf I built from lumber that was gifted to me by my neighbor. They were throwing the wood out from where he goes to church and asked me if I might like to have it. Free wood? Of course I'll take it! I'm not sure what kind of wood it is, but I think it's some variety of cherry; not absolutely sure on that.
The measurements are as follows: 6 feet tall by 4 feet wide by 10 inches deep. The shelves are adjustable by the recessed rails on the inside. Just a simple little bookshelf I put together. The finish is 4 coats of semi-gloss polyurethane which I applied by hand; no sprayer used.
Here's the pictures:

This is the pewter casting I've been promising

Image

Made out of lead-free pewter from a milliput original, patinated and polished. Sculpting took about three hours and making the mould about four days or so. The actual process of mould making and casting was a doddle so I would recommend anyone to have a go.

Image

And here is me trying to look all "Dennis Wheatley stylee" wearing it.

Cheers 'n' beers...

Knotwork Pyrography

Postby Mika » 28 Sep 2005, 19:43

So WOW, all of you! It'll be so hard to vote, hum.

Well and here is my first entry in this category. It's a wooden box (that I didn't made myself) pyrographed. I've drawn the design on it and then carved on it with my burning tool :o Then sanded and varnished it. too

So that's the top::)

This second entree of mine, a fir coffee and matching end tables, has special meaning to me. You see, they came to me as wood that had been thrown away at the curb as rubish to be picked up by the sanitation department. For fifty years it had served it's purpose as four inch tongue and groove siding on a house. It had four layers of thick gray and white paint that I had to first remove with nontoxic paint remover. Once I got it to bare wood, I hand sanded it to let the natural beauty of the fir wood come through. They have three coats of hand applied high-gloss polyurethane to make them shine. What would have been trash became a treasure. This was the first creation to come out of my shop. It found a home with a Pagan couple while I was doing an arts & crafts show in Hannibal, Missouri sponsored by The Ozark Avalon. I did the pieces in a Frank Loyd Wright style; framed, cantalevered, and low. Here are the pictures:

Selenite wand

I bought a length of rough Selenite and it wanted to be made 'nice', well thats what it told me

Pity the pic does not do Selenite any favours - this is the best of 10 attempts at capturing it
