2008 BELTANE/SAMHUINN CRAFTS ENTRIES

Postby Earthwoman » 31 Mar 2008, 00:16

Notice: Please add your original crafts for the current Eisteddfod here, and post any comments into the appropriate feedback thread. Entries for this category include three-dimensional objects crafted by hand, such as wands, staves, athames, jewelery, altars, shrines, and so forth, but excluding sculpture. Generally speaking, craft items would be used for some purpose, as opposed to art created to be viewed.

Beltane Flower Tiara

Postby Turtle » 31 Mar 2008, 19:23

I would like to enter this flower tiara I made that will be worn by our May Goddess in our next Beltane celebration. It's made out of beading wire, beads in pink and greenish shades, ribbons in pink, white and green, and textile flowers.

have a look at the close ups:

I would like to enter my sacred book, that I made for recording rituals, storing photographs and documenting my journey down the Druid path.

This is the outside cover, covered with blue velvet to symbolise my love for water.

The inside pages. The paper is parchment paper and the book was hand-sewn by me.

Carbon-neutral bird feeding device

Postby solarization » 04 Apr 2008, 08:42

A carbon-neutral bird table...

This is something I knocked together on Monday afternoon. As it's still standing firm, I thought I may as well enter it under Crafts...

The bird table is made entirely from a knackered old folding chair from Ikea, which was otherwise destined for disposal. The post it sits upon was 'liberated' from an old fence which the local council are taking down nearby.

I made it using hand-tools - none of that electric stuff - and erected it on a brown-field site (my back garden).

As you may guess, it is also heated entirely by Solar power and water is provided by a rain-collecting device (bird bath, not shown).

I know it's not terribly fancy, but I ran out of bits of chair. Still, it looks a lot nicer with a blackbird on it.

I do woodburning and this is a piece I made last year. It depicts a scene that comes as a wall painting in the Movie "The Mists of Avalon" and shows the Mother Goddess and how she creates a balance in the cycle of life between hunter and prey, the stag (King Arthur) and the wolf (Mordred).

I have shown this on the arts and crafts forum recently, so I hope it is ok to put as an entry here too.
I made a candle for the Spring Equinox/ Alban Eilir. The scent is daffodil, as it was these flowers in my garden (also in the photo) that largely inspired the idea for the colours and scent.

This is a rosary that I created in honor of Gerd, a Norse goddess of Spring. The beads are a combination of ceramic and glass. I used a spring green to represent the tender new growth, as well as small white flower beads for the first spring bulbs starting to bloom at this time of year. The gold spacers represent the promise of the harvest to come.

The Green Man

I made this Green Man to be representative of the 4 seasons, as life and death happen all year round. So the colours, textures and shapes are intermingled as they circle the face.
The face is made form clay that I moulded.
Each tree in the ogham is represented in its leaf form.
The leaves are made form Tyvek, silk paper and wire, organsa and dissolvable fabric that has been machine embroidered and fine wire that I knitted with small glass beads.
Hidden in the leaves are mite holes and evidence of insect infestation and beetle damage!

Blessings
