Three warrior women of the flowerbed:
Lily of the valley, with her fibrous roots a-choking
Sweet woodruff, creeping steadily through underbrush and shadow
Golden marguerite, who surrounds herself with children
There are as many types of women as there are flowers, each with her own style of defense. Gardening has taught me that the garden is more a battlefield than I ever believed possible, and that survival depends upon persistence, strength and ingenuity as much as beauty. Adapt to your surroundings or change them to suit your needs, these flower-women say, and when opportunity presents itself, take it.
