2008 LUGHNASADH/IMBOLC CRAFTS ENTRIES

Postby Earthwoman » 22 Jun 2008, 16:32

Notice: Please add your original crafts for the current Eisteddfod here, and post any comments into the appropriate feedback thread. Entries for this category include three-dimensional objects crafted by hand, such as wands, staves, athames, jewelery, altars, shrines, and so forth, but excluding sculpture. Generally speaking, craft items would be used for some purpose, as opposed to art created to be viewed.

My Ogham Coins

Postby Frog » 27 Jun 2008, 12:57

I'd like to submit my Ogham "coins" to the competition. Following a walk in the woods, I was gifted a branch of Silver Birch (it had fallen from the tree, so I said a collected thanks). after leaving the branch to settle, I then whittled the bark off, sanded the section down to remove any rough edges, then cut 15 disks, all roughly equal size.
I then sanded the corners off each disk and smoothed the surface, before burning the symbols onto one side using a flat soldering iron. I haven't varnished or sealed them in anyway so that my contact will further link them to me.

I keep the disks in a (bought) velvet pouch - and randomly pick a disk as a "guide for the day".

Enjoy this life. It would be a shame if we looked forward to the next, only to find we forgot the one before.

It was difficult deciding on an expression for his face, as it was so easy to change. Just by turning a leaf or sticking another bit down.
