Rebirth of the Oak

Here is a tune I originally wrote for the Druidic Dawn web site, which is available at http://www.druidicdawn.org ...

Rebirth of the Oak is highly symbolic for me, particularly the following items:

Rebirth of the Oak (title)
~Ties into Druidic Dawn
~Represents the resurgence of Celtic culture
~Annual rebirth every spring
~Rebirth at sunrise (dawn)

Intro
~‘Faux’ bagpipes
~Represents our rich piping tradition

Awens
~Cascading, left and right
~Call and answer between two neighbouring groups
~Indicating dialog between various Celtic tribes
~From one hill fort to another

Wailing guitar
~Represents my own will
~Dedication to re-discovering and developing the old ways

End
~Modulates to a major chord
~Represents the sun climbing fully above the horizon
~This is dawn, the beginning of a new day

The Year of Jubilo

Postby Fox » 10 Jul 2008, 12:34

The Year of Jubilo

Not particularly seasonal, but Bardic as it is about the healing power of music.

Lament for Mother Earth

Although not seasonal as such, I think the Lament is relevant to all seasons as we see the increasing impact of humankind on our beautiful Mother Earth.

Unfortunately, Soundclick.com will not allow me to post a link to a single piece. So I have placed the piece at the top of my Soundclick.com player at the following link:

reconciliation dreaming

this song is really addressed to aborigine people in despair at the devastation of their culture by the arrival of the invaders from europe.
i'm double-tracked, accompanying myself on guitar and digging sticks, which i made myself from the wood of the mallee tree.
it's some 17mb or so, so it's hosted at http://www.esnips.com/web/wyeuro-songs/ (sorry, i still haven't learnt to convert .wavs to mp3s  ). scroll down a little and it's the first file under 'files'.

here are the lyrics. (a tjurunga is a power object, like an icon, except that everyone has one). the australian government on behalf of white people is saying 'sorry' in a big way to these gentle, intelligent, mystical people, and this is my part in that. the imagery of the second verse was given to me in a meditation under the mistletoe which grows in great big upsidedown bushes on the branches of the mallee tree, a small desert eucalypt, whose name means 'woman'.

reconciliation dreaming

when the rainbow snake came winding
from the sacred dreamtime springs
from the colours of her infinite spectra
she made all beautiful things
she made the eternal dreamings
of the stones and the trees and the stars
if you gaze in silence at the end of the rain
you can see her sacred tjurunga

refrain
do you think that the dreamtime ended
when the white people's history starts?
do you think that the dreamtime spirits' love
couldn't penetrate white people's hearts?
our hard, hard hearts.

mistletoe man went a fishing
in the sacred waterhole
caught him a fish and it tasted good
when he cooked it on the coals
then he took the skeleton of that dreamtime fish
and he flung it far away
and it grew as it flew and it landed ribs up
as a ship in botony bay

refrain
do you think....
...white people's hearts?
our cold, cold hearts.

mistletoe dreamtime spirit man,
child of the earth and the sky
when i see that skeleton in your hand
i begin to understand why
for our lives are dreamed by the rainbow snake
every little thing that we do
our lives and our laws and our long bitter wars
and our reconciliations too!

refrain
do you think....
...white people's hearts?
mmm mmm mmm

no i don't think the dreamtime ended
when the white people's history starts
'cos i know that the dreamtime spirits' love
can penetrate white people's hearts
it penetrated mine
yes it penetrated mine
it penetrated mine....
