Winter’s Song

I wrote this poem a while back and have now set it to music.

Dreaming alone on a winter's night
Crystals of snow, flowers in light
Firelight flickers are faces once known
Walk away, with the mist must roam
From this land.

Snow in the fields where the corn once swayed
Ice on the pavements where children played
Yesterday's smile a winter's flame
Fades with the frost 'till the Spring comes again
To this land.

Misty swirls down the cobblestones
Whispers a tune to call home its own
A Winter's Song, a bird's dying call
Floats on the wind 'till night's curtain falls
On this land.

The piece is the first on my Soundclick player at the following link:

Twisting of the Hayrope (Tribal Remix)

http://pages.infinit.net/jamie/Hayrope.mp3

Here's my take on the traditional Irish air, 'Casadh an Tsúgáin', or 'Twisting of the Hayrope".

I'm playing a Burke Session Pro high D whistle, and the drums are provided by my Zoom PS-04 portable studio.

Enjoy! (I hope...)

http://uilennest.net/sounds/HarvestQueen.htm

We sow and we reap. And when the summer ends, and the days grow shorter, it becomes apparent that we reaped what we sowed. And whatever our harvest is, it will have to take us through the dark half of the year. Part of the harvest will be our seeds for the next cycle. And we know that, if we look into the eyes of the Harvest Queen....
A short song.

Harvest Queen

look into the eyes... of the Harvest Queen.
I see that the summer has passed, and ... what that means to me
We reap what we sow now, and that's how it's meant to be
When I look into the eyes... of the Harvest Queen

And when the darkness returns, we look back at the light
And when our hearth fire burns, we gaze in the flames so bright
And now I wonder if the seeds that I sowed where right
And now I wonder ... can we make it through the night?

Where do we go now, and where have we been.
it's time to let go now, of some sh*t we've seen
Where do we go now, and where have we been.
it's time to hold on now, to the wheat of the Harvest Queen

look back at the light
at the other side of the darkness it will shine again.
our stores are filled with what our seeds have brought us
we'll make it through, we'll make it through the night. (3x)

Look into the eyes... of the Harvest Queen.(4x)
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence

The Song of Silverhand came about because I was pondering the different representations of the Tuatha de Danan in Irish culture through time. It sort of popped into my head (words and music), and I furiously wrote it down on the back of an envelope while pulled over at the side of the road. I don't know why I do my best writing while driving.

The Song of Silverhand

We're Gods and Heroes and Fallen Angels
And so we be
And so we be
I'll tell you a truth if you'll sit here a spell
And listen to me
And listen to me

It's many long years since we've come to this land
From across the sea
From across the sea
And many hard battles were fought by my band
And all won by me
And all won by me
Until the dark day when I lost my hand
Through treachery
Through treachery
And down from the high seat I was forced to stand
For a century
For a century

We're Gods and Heroes and Fallen Angels
(etc. chorus)

The next king was Bres, the Half-Formorian
He knew tyranny
Just tyranny
So living silver was made into a hand
And given to me
And given to me
Fashioned by my clever brother Dian
He set me free
He set me free
I slew the usurper with my silver hand
Once more the An Ri
Once more the An Ri
But death comes to every hero and man
And even to me
And even to me
So tell the old legends whenever you can
And I'll not cease to be
And I'll not cease to be
Remember High King Nuada Airgetlam
And the Tuatha De
And the Tuatha De
