I wanted to show the two main forces - god and goddess as a fellow beings assisting, leading, or simply taking the road with us. Here they are standing before blocking the path so we could slow down and think is it really the right one and what we want to find, or archive.
Though it's a very classic and common pose that's the way I read it.
