In My Youth I See

In my youth I see a burning light,
a burning light burning bright.

In my youth I see a firey orange leaf in autumn.
A firey leaf shining in the light.

In my youth I see a trout swimming in a shallow
pool of water below the white waterfall in the river.

In my youth I see an apple. An apple on the tree.
A shiny red apple on the apple tree.

In my youth I see a quartz crystal clear as glass,
as clear as glass.

In my youth I see a shiny coin.
A shiny silver dollar to buy something with.

In my youth I see a deer.
A brown buck running through the woods.

In my youth I see a beautiful mountain.
A beautiful majestic mountain.

In my youth I see a teacher trying to teach
me something.

Back in the spring of 1979 the eighth grade class of Sand Hill Middle School ( Buncombe Co NC ) held a poetic prose competition. The only rule was that the poem had to be titled " In My Youth I See ". I wrote it during my english/spelling class taught by Mrs. Lalley and submitted it into the competition. I later found out I came in as the first place winner and they put the poem in the school newspaper. That was way back in April 1979. I was only 14 years old.

I think I will try my luck with it again, here in the Eisteddfod competition. It is certainly a poem with a lot of feelings and memories for me.

Sweet taste

The air is filled with a sweet smell
Sweet smells drifting on the breeze
Blossom blooming everywhere
Carpets of flowers across the land
Blossom up high, on the trees

Bees buzzing from flower to flower
Smells so sweet, tastes so sweet
Sticky golden liquid oozing
Dripping down the side of jars
Crystallising into pools

The sweet nectar of the gods
Drinks that taste of summertime
Licked off fingers, spread on bread
Even put on cuts and grazes
This honey from busy little bees

LOOKING BACK

following my footsteps
and the traces they left

I sense the perfume
of forgotten futures
I smell the blossoms
of matured fruits

I see the splendour
of walking the path
that leads me to me
that leads me to you
that leads me to the sea
that leads me to the forest
that leads me to the mountains
that leads me to the holy stones
that leads me to the sacred chapels
that leads me all the way
and back again
there is no way to happiness, happiness is the way (the buddha)

I Count the Dust

I count the dust of passing time
The golden massive grains of sand

A misty breath forms into stars
A billion fractions of a moment

By star and moon we travel afar
Beyond the golden compass of time

Naught but the memory marks the journey
But that, in essence, is what we remain

Memories, older than heavens domain

iron

iron is clawed out of the shrieking ground
by beasts of steel
big, bold chunks of rocky ore
up-front and real

fire melts into the sweetly yielding ore
blood red, out dashes
the vivid, blazing, molten stream
with hissing splashes

purified, perfect, it is poured
into the well-made mold
constrained to form it hardens
in the clutch of cold

mine to manipulate, mine to hammer and form,
bend to my will
i am the smith at the forge
strength, art and will.

Dread Queen

The raucous snarling barking shrieks of your children
Wake me

The din of their ebony rainbowed wings, the piercing jet eyes
Startle me, see me

The whisper of your wings, the challenge of your voice, the demands of your ways
Awaken me

Initiation

Distant waterfalls spilled; resounding
Cadence of thunder roared through fog.
The misty cloak of morning flowed,
In the green valley with softened ground.

No breeze, just stillness and a call
From a raven, old, sharing news
Of a tone too old for human lore;
A tomb of thought beyond the norm.

Yet the maidens ears picked up the meaning,
For her heart was pure and radiant gleaming,
She'd followed the teachings of the Ancients,
With cautious steps, trust, and patience.

The call awoke her dreaming womb,
She was spirited alive, as blossoms bloom.
In the spring when rainbows dazzle,
In the green valley with softened ground.

A poem I wrote some time ago which had, still has, a deep felt sorrow.

white ants©

I found you a day late:
three bloodied stumps
cooked under new light
thick tears of crimson sap
pooled like clotted blood
down your torso.

Accosting the school’s gardener,
determined to understand such culling
I was silenced with two short words.

Of course they’re white I had said
returning to kneel by your side
numbed that your skin,
baked by half a century of sun,
could be undermined by the blind.

Standing over you then,
myself a white ant,
I wondered if you could tell
the difference between me
and those who had brought you
to your knees only yesterday
when birds had nested in your hair
preening you from their feathers?

And later, as the clouds started to burn
I had asked you then if anyone would notice
that there would be less air worth breathing
with your passing?

But you were silent,
the magpies’ warble
your answer.

ROSE

Rugged Rosa Regossa
Your fragrant feminine flowers
Guarded by a briary bush

Your pink perfumed petals
spreading - scented and soft
Amid the boundless barrier
Denying access to all but the valiant

Hankering to stroke voluptous blooms
Inhale sweet aroma - drink the dew drops from your downy cup
The gallant chivilrous champion
Coveting the trophy
Must master prickly stems
Trimming tufts and thickets that hamper his quest

Having penetrated the thorny exterior
The delicate, quivering reward
proves worthy of the challenge.

A world lost in time
One, Oh, I wish was mine
My mind wondering there often I find
Seeking its energy, peace, calmness until I am fine
At times I pine....
A longing in my soul for the oneness of that time.....
A world lost in time ....
"May the sun bring you new energy by day, may the moon softly restore you by night, may the rain wash away your worries, may the breeze blow new strength into your being, may you walk through the world and know it's beauty all the days of your life"
