My ancestral shrine, made with air-dry clay, acrylic paint and cowrie shells. Inspired by the colorful egun'gun tradition of West Africa and Lucumi religion of Cuba. The nine masks represent the collective spirits of my ancestors (the "egun"). Nine is the number of the orisha Oya, the guardian of the dead. The pattern around the frame represents the river of life force (called "ashé") to which our spirits are bound to return.

A wand still awaiting its partner.
Carved with knife and sandpaper only, from a shard of wood left dangling, blasted away from the fresh lightning run down the side of an old oak.
It has never touched the ground.
