The path
I am standing at a cross-road,
where past and present are shown,
and a glimpse of the future is to be seen.
Looking back I see the nice straight shortcut,
on a broad asphalt road I could have travelled.
Next to it lies the path with the numerous bends, diversions and cross-roads I have travelled,
and the thorny bushes and pitfalls I had to struggle through, the wounds of which are still healing.
Yet I am grateful I have chosen that way,
for when I would have travelled the other path,
I wouldn’t have smelt the roses,
or watch them bloom beautifully,
on the thorny bushes!
I would have missed the lake of contemplation,
where I have rested in the shade of a beautiful weeping willow,
to recover my strength,
and where I have found the courage,
to wrestle through the thorny bushes.
Yes, looking back, I’ve travelled the right path,
And I say thanks for the lessons life has taught me.
Now I must chose the path to travel further on,
Which road to take?
The one where the destination is clear from where I stand,
or the path through the forest, with many sideways,
of which I cannot see where it will lead me, but only guess where it will be going.
I don’t have to ask myself, for I know which path is mine to travel…
