The Deluding of Gylfi - Entry

Postby Jeb » 20 Mar 2005, 04:36

The Deluding of Gylfi - Entry

Image

"King Gylfi was a wise man and skilled in magic. He marvelled that the Aesir were so knowledgeable that everything came to pass by their will, and he wondered if that was on account of their own strength or whether the divinities they worshipped brought that about. He set out on a secret journey to Asgard, changing himself into the likeness of an old man by way of disguise. But the Aesir were wiser than he, in that they had foreknowledge. They saw his journey before he came, and worked spells against him."
- from "The Deluding of Gylfi" in Snorri's Prose Edda (Jean Young translation)

The challenge, for those who are interested, is to choose any mythological event from the Gylfaginning and try to find it in the picture. When I was trying to decide on a title for the work I found I kept seeing different events and characters from Norse Mythology all over it. The work virtually titled itself.

Can anyone see High One, Just As High, and Third?

Naglfar Breaks Loose - Entry

Postby Jeb » 20 Mar 2005, 04:57

Naglfar Breaks Loose - Entry

Image

"... Naglfar breaks loose.
A ship journeys from the east, Muspell's people are coming
Over the waves, and Loki steers."
- Voluspa 50-51 (Larington translation)

"At that time, too, the ship known as Naglfar will become free. It is made of dead men's nails, so it is worth warning you that, if anyone dies with his nails uncut, he will greatly increase the material for that ship which both the gods and men devoutly hope will take a long time building. In this tidal wave, however, Naglfar will be launched."
- Gylfaginning (Young translation)

Naglfar is the ship that will bring the enemies to the doors of Asgard at the time of Ragnarok. Kind of a scary way to get kids to cut their nails, I'd say!

Hi Az,

Same deal as with your other entry--couldn't see the thumbnail, so I made the quote to make the link visible.

Nice!

The Abyss - Entry

The ripples you can see are not on the surface but midway in the water and is called a thermocline, caused by 2 different water temperatures.

It was taken from 12m (40 feet) down in the Blue Hole on Gozo, one of the Maltese Islands.

Its a scan of a photo and only had minor colour retouching.

The goddess in green
The goddess of all

The goddess of hope
The goddess in brown
The goddess of all
That you've burned to the ground

I agree Hawky. It makes me feel like I am peering up from the depths. All of the entries so far are wonderful.
