Shouldn't be forestmonk3966's fire dagger be in the physical art section? What's the difference between 'craft' and 'physical art'?
(re-post this if this question doesn't belong here but I don't know where else to post it)

Mey and all: Maybe this will help clarify:

Mechanical Art -- These are works that require mechanical assistance, such as photography, computer generated art and graphics

It is a tough distinction between physical art and crafts. But I believe that the physical art is more for classical style art such as drawing, painting, sculpture. Where crafts would be woodworking, metal working, needlework etc. Tough decision to decide on some of these as to where they should go.

Good question, Mey, and Forestmonk did ask me where it belongs before posting. I think metal working is more craft than art, but as you say, it's a fine distinction.

Nice athame, Forestmonk!

It's a shame you don't have closeups.

I'll admit I was confused about the physical art/craft distinction, because the sgian dubh I entered is definitely an "art knife" rather than a use knife. I ended up guessing based on the categorical description, and it looks like I ended up in the right place.

Sorry for the confusion about this, but since we're already under way here, I think I'll just continue to muddle along with everyone else for this competition with an eye toward better defining things for the next one. I DO think everything's in the right place so far, but if the definitions need to be clarified, I'll work on that. Until then, we'll just take things as they come.

Thanks Frank and Kat Lady. I did have fun making it, although it took me a while to finish it. I started that over a year ago. I finished it in two days. I might add to it in the future, but for now its finished.

Athame -- Entry

Postby Alferian » 02 Apr 2005, 00:06

Another Entry

Greetings everyone. Knives seem to be in this season, eh? At CopperLion's urging I am entering an athame that I made for him recently. It's blade is obsidian and its pommel hematite. The handle, which is attached to the blade by sinews, is carved from a branch of buckeye chestnut (horsechestnut). It is carved with sprials on both sides inspired by the heel stone at the doorway of Newgrange. On one side near the blace is a carved Moon and on the other a Solar crossed circle. Around the pommel is "Morrigan" (Great Queen) in oghams. The whole thing wanted to be stained black and I let the natural yellowish color of the wood come through in the carvings.

Absolutely exquisite Alferian (of coarse I am biased :-) ) you read my mind and created exactly what I was looking for in an athame

You are a master of the art of ritual tools.

Hi Alferian,

Yep, tis the season for ritual bladery, and that's certainly a nice one.

Here's the question: if it wins, who gets the gold harp thingie, you or Copperkitty?
