It looks like a lace cap hydrangea to me. They are used by landscapers in these parts but I'm not sure about where you live. They are beautiful. :D Hope this helps!

It is an Hydrangea aspera 'Macrophylla' I think, do you remember if the leaves were a bit softer feeling than the usual Hydrangea? A wee bit like velvet?

If it didn't have softer leaves it still is a Hydrangea

euh I feel a bit bustling in here, I'm only just here in Druid's Grove, but I am already into (wild mainly) flowers when I was a child and it just slipped out of my mouth

Hi Anemone,

I can't remember the texture of the leaves but I think , looking at this link, that Susanne had it spot on

You are very welcome to bustle in as much as you want and I also love wild flowers. Welcome to the boards and I hope to hear more from you

Bright Blessings

Depending how hairy the leaves were (and whether under the leaves were a redder fuzz) then it could be a Hydrangea sikeniensis (spelling?) rarer than the others but just as beautiful.
From decay comes growth, fungal or otherwise. All stages of death are filled with life and life to be. Creation is made up of ugly beauty that is gorgeous to those who can feel as well as they can see.
