Other Druid Orders

Postby wolfsbane » 20 Mar 2010, 11:58

Although i have been a member of the DHP for many years now it wasnt until january 2010 that i thought i would take the plunge and join proper.
I have recieved 3 packages of learning material and an enjoying them loads.

This however has not stopped me looking around at other druid groups. I found that some of them who i shall not name through fear of legal action are nearly as dogmatic as the Christian Curch. They sit behind this larger than life warrior figure and then say we are not in anyway linked with anyother druid order except blah, blah, blah.

Reading through some of the sites almost put me off a path which i have followed for nearly 15years.

Then please stop reading about the others! :D I had joined another well known order and found the same thing, so left it.
I'm happy with OBOD.

Indeed there are Druid orders which are poised to prey, legally on anyone who speaks out against them.

Is there no place sacred from this range of sickness?

Yes.
The OBOD is legit, has no such plague and works in all ways to be sure nothing like this is involved.

The Druid Network and the newly revived British Druid Order (good luck to Philip Shallcrass on this) are both really good organisations, and not all the small independent groves are as crazy as certain West Country Druid Orders!

I have also looked into other groups, but OBOD seems to have the most information available and the course seems to have more credability- from my point of view anyhow. There was one other group which looked OK but were geographically confined.

Does anybody around here have any experience with these people:
http://www.tuathadebrighid.net/index.html

There is some resonance there with my own thinking and inclinations for worship, but as I'm confined to internet research, I'd love to know from people who've had first-hand experiences. You can pm me if it's not something to be discussed publicly.

Thanks in advance for any info :curtsey:

Almost- I think that is the American Group , while there is also a UK group. But I guess they would be very similar...being the same Druid Order.

Who is Greer?

Ahhhh, I see....are they the fraternal lodge druids?

Greer is the Arch Druid of the AODA(merica), which seems to be very much like the OBOD, except America. His book is very good. I also enjoy his Arch Druid's report, which is sort of a druid's perspective on economics/environment...was beating the Peak Oil drum before it was widely fashionable.

AOD are still going in the UK, but are a masonic type order, or maybe a Gentlemen's club.

Isn't that where the roots of OBOD came from? Wasn't Nichols a member then left and set up his own Order?

I confess that I have sniffed other hydrants, too. It would be nice to have an organization as dynamic as OBOD in the US. But should such mythical organization exist, there is likely not a group anywhere near where I live, and since I don't get out much anyway, I find that I am very happy with OBOD. I really like the people, and I like the way the gwersi are organized. So, I am not straying; I am staying!

Oops no, sorry, that's Ancient Druid Order not the Ancient Order of Druids.

Right I'm going to go and see what the difference is, if there is one...

Isn't the Ancient Druid Order Rollo Maughfling's lot that do the ceremonies at Stonehenge? If so they are a pretty well respected lot but I have to admit that I don't know much about their organization.

Edited to add: No it's not Rollo's group, they are the Glastonbury Order of Druids. The Ancient Druid Order meet at Treadwell's fortnightly according to Wikipedia.

Dammit! we need an I-Spy book of Druids!

The Ancient Druid Order (not Ancient Order of Druids) was a spiritual group founded by George Watson MacGregor Reid in 1909. As I understand it it was mainly a Qabalistic group along the lines of the Golden Dawn, but also influenced heavily by the fashionable field of Egyptology. They are still going, they call themselves The Druid Order. I don't know what they do these days- they seem to keep themselves to themselves and as far as I know don't see themselves as Pagans. Can't find a web presence either, but according to the TDN website they are still having their meetings at Treadwell's bookshop in London.

So the Ancient Druid Order sits somewhere between OBOD and the Ancient Order of Druids? And OBOD sits somewhere between Ancient Druid Order and the rest of neo-Pagan Druidry?

Not sure where AODA might sit on that spectrum... Or any other Order for that matter.
