Finding a way to make a Cerrunnos mask

Glad to have found this forum , just wondered if others have advice on this craft related journey. After thinking and exploring how to go about possibly making a mask honouring Cerunnos, this is where I am up to.

After seeing a photo of animal skull and antlers, this got me thinking perhaps there is another way, like papier mache?

After searching online it looks like there are goat/deer fancy dress masks made from plastic, although I imagine these could be quite warm.

After thinking some more, from what I have seen there are half masquerade style plain masks that could have embellishments to create the Cerunnos the horned god, although trying to glue antlers or horns would be possible, I would be worried these would fall off. The other idea was to begin with a showgirl style headdress as a structure and make papier mache horns/antlers.

Anwyay, sure this will keep me thinking for a while.

You could use a preprepared papier mache/ cardboard backing, like the type they sell at hobbycraft or make one yourself. I recently made one of Herne this way.

I shaped the antlers then covered them in metal leaf (gold was too expensive!) then painted the face green and stuck silk ivy leaves all over with a glue gun, so the golden antlers appear to be peeking out from the ivy face

Paper mache on a commercial half mask base, or leather come to mind.
There are leather masks out on the internet, I think they use water to soften, then work the leather and dry again.

I've had great fun using plaster bandages that you mould to your face using a partner to help and having prepared add ons also made of the plaster bandage stuff to attach with more plaster bandage. It works very well and I've made a boars head with tusks this way. Its very paint friendly when dry. you could mould half your skull at the same time and affix the ready made antlers to that. I dont think it would work with huge antlers then I think you would need to make a wire framework which could then be bandaged. You can get plaster bandage from hobbycraft shops.

Hi Heddwen, thank you for your reply . Just visited the link, all of your masks are beautiful, particularly like the Brigid mask. Yes, will go and explore papier mache some more, sure this will keep me occupied for some time.

Hi Skydove, thank you for the reply . Glad to learn you have made a boars head in this way, sounds brilliant. Plaster bandage sounds like fun, a good place to start, although I am tempted with shaping wire. Plenty of experimenting to keep me occupied over the winter.

regarding plaster - don't !!!! forget the vaseline on your skin. I speak from experience
