Elhonna's sewing

Postby Elhonna » 07 Mar 2012, 11:20

Hi everybody :hiya: !

As a consequence of the Obod training, I let the Awen flow through me more and more, and begin (again) to do what I used to do.
I don't have a lot of time and space, but I rearranged my small interior (when I say small, I mean 18 m²), so now it's really overcroweded by music and fabric :D !

I used to sew somes years ago, but just for extra clothes that I couldn't wear all time (medieval dress, velvet cape etc...). Since two or three years now, it seems to me that I cannot find interesting clothes anymore to wear, or only too expensive for my student budget. So I decided to do them myself.

Here's the result of my first complete project. I just begin to learn the art of sewing, so if you see some mistakes it's normal. But any critic is welcome of course !
This is an elfic vest as you can see. I called it Night Shadow (the beginning of a Night Shadow set ?) because I was inspired by the shadow of the leaves on the floor during a full moon night.

Lovely, Elhonna. It must feel very satisfying to wear something that you have made from scratch. Well done!

Thank you very much  !
And yes, it's even more satisfying when someone asks you "where did you bought it ?" and you explain you did it. Most of the time they don't trust you, as if it was incredible to find someone who sews...Then they see the mistakes, and can't help but being sarcastic about you. Not very constructive.

Very nice Elhonna.
Nonconstructive comments can originate from jealousy. When faced with such, you can walk away smiling because it's something you made, you are probably the only one who will wear it...and you already know where the mistakes are so their negative comments are a waste of your time. Besides, in my world, there are no such thing as mistakes, there are learning opportunities and there times when a new idea or way of doing things needs to be tried even if it doesn't work out quite the same way as the original design.
I love the vest, especially the way you've made the hat.

I see no mistakes! Character & personal touches, yes...mistakes, no :D
Keep up the fine work & if you decide to make them to sell put me on the list!

Thank you both of you for your comments !

To Silverleaf_Willow, I can only answer that I already do what you say, I mean smilling and trying to learn from my mistakes. I have already done a list like "no do this next time" or "prefer this to that", and been on several websites to see how to do something more easily or another special technique.
And to Sue : your comment makes me smile :) . I don't sell them for now, or at least not in the US ! I just train and do one to those who ask me, demanding a small payment in return for the hours of work, but sending it through the ocean would just be too expensive for now. Be sure that I will tell you if I decide to finally make them to sell !

A new one made for my wife with the color of bards ! More pics on our blog :) .
At the end of the article it is said (for those who don't speak french) that I will begin to sell it at the end of this year, maybe even before ! I think to Sue...
Anyway, I don't post here to sell but only to show you the new one. Enjoy !

Elhonna,
These are exquisite and so very creative! What an inspiration to see such work as the result of a stronger spiritual connection!
To create beauty with one's own hands in such a way is nothing short of blessed; never let another's foolish, petty selfishnesses hurt you or stop you from continuing on this path of creative inspiration! Well done!

Thank you very much SonicRed !
Your message, along with the other ones of course, encourage me every day to keep searching and creating, no matter when or where, no matter what people think I should do and where I should go "for my own weel being".
I'm so very happy (and always surprised) to see that what I do is appreciated, it makes me feel confident and confortable with what I really am.
Thank you again :) !

Those are very cool! I've just started the journey to make my own clothes as well, due largely to not finding clothes that really catch my eye. I love being able to work with more natural fabrics as well.

Do you use a pattern for the basic construction? Or entirely your own work? I've been using patterns and then adjusting them here and there as I want.

It depends on the time. My very first medieval dress has been made from a real one that I used as a model to do my own pattern.
As for the vest, I bought a pattern to have the basic construction, exactly like you, and I ajust them, cutting here and adding here some pieces. For the patterns I don't find, I just use a cloth a already have and transform it.

That sounds absolutely fabulous. I wish the world were not so big, we could spend an afternoon chatting and discussing fabrics and sewing. So few people of our generation have any interest in it.

@ Aynfean : I wish I could talk to you too ! But sadly I'm on the other side of the world, and besides, my english isn't good enough to have a real discussion about fabric and sewing... but I try to change this ! Maybe we'll see each other one day in an international Obod camp ? Or I can give you my email / skype adress, but it will be hard to find times when will both be awakened.

@ Ayla and Aphritha : thank you for your kind messages !

I'm actually doing some short and long fingerless gloves with the same kind of patterns, but as I don't want to flood this topic, I'll put them directly on my blog (see signature). Don't hesitate to look at them and tell me what you think about it !
