What are you afraid of?

Postby Twig » 11 Jan 2008, 08:18

Seriously. It is so tempting to post an amusing answer, but I'm after your Big Fear. And also if you think you can do something about it.

So, here goes:

I am afraid of being abandoned in a nursing home. And I have no idea what I can do about it.

Seriously brilliant question, Twig.

I'm afraid of not achieving all that I want to achieve. I really do try too damned hard. What I can do about it is relax, chill out and go with the flow. There, I said it.

Good question: A few years ago, I had the feeling that my life was exactly how I wanted it to be and my biggest frear was to lose it all. Well, then it happened: I lost everything I had built, and even though it hurted badly, and still does sometimes, it was not as bad as expected. Since then, I have lost a lot of my fears...

My biggest fear is to die in pain...

My biggest fear is similar to Twigs - having to be looked after 24/7 without the mental ability / forfitude to commit euthanasia

I agree with Twig and Darc - I fear being left in a nursing home in old age.

my other big fear is a prolonged painful death.

Can't do a thing about either so I don't dwell on them - still, they lurk in the corners in the dark.

I have the same fear. I'm sure I will try to escape, to be outside to commune with nature. (After they find me hiding in the bushes), they will probably have to strap me down and sedate me.

Twig, I recommend watching the movie "Bubba Hotep", a comedy, horror, mystery.
Elvis and JFK, both alive and in nursing homes, fight for the souls of their fellow residents as they battle an ancient Egyptian Mummy.

The movie is wacky and wonderful, and may help ease some fears about nursing homes, as 2 residents become heros.
Elvis is played by Bruce Campbell
JFK is played by Ossie Davis

Rather a morbid post, but very interesting.
I have dyslexia and so I have days where my working memory is very bad. The day to day tasks get embarrassing and confusing sometimes, so I have to fall back on some of my coping mechanisms. The big fear is losing my mind, not knowing who my loved ones are anymore along with my own identity. A friend of the family had Alzheimer's disease, and it was heart breaking to watch the deterioration.
So I guess there in lye’s my fear

That is such a good suggestion. Twig is going to love that film. It's a hoot.

Also, how about 'Inside I'm Dancing.'

OK... mine is largely influenced by my recent divorce.. Actually.. there's two then...

1. Losing contact with my daughters.

2. Spending the rest of my life solo.

Ok.. it might not happen, but those are my FEARS.

Living in a world run by bigots, racists, and facists. Living in a world where the color of ones' skin determines their worth, instead of the merrit of their life and actions. Living in a world where halfbreeds like me (half Irish, half hispanic) and my son (Swedish, Irish, half hispanic), are not allowed to live in peace to do our own thing.

My biggest fear; dying. By that I mean before I'm ready to go. Not actually afraid, as such of the event.

My father died when I was quite young and I'd hate to see my family suffer from the same void that a premature death can bring.

I'd also say that up there with my own personal top fear is the fear that something terrible could happen to any of my loved ones.

Whales. They are beautiful and quite mysterious, but also garguantuan. I'm not sure why I am scared of them, but I hope I get over my fear. Apparently I am going to be forced to go whale watching! :wow:

I'm also scared of losing my mind as well, well not really scared. It's hard to explain.

Also a world run by racists, bigots, and facists would be on that list.

Agree with losing marbles fear and bad things happening to loved ones. I also have a wierd one which is that I had to give up driving as I couldn't get down the road without fear of causing an accident, despite driving instructors confirming my competence. It expresses itself in other ways too. My fear is that I will never get to the bottom of it. Greygnome
