equal

This Forum is dedicated to the Druidic search for the underlying meaning of life, the unifying nature of our common humanity, and our interconnectedness in the search for truth.
Forum rules
This forum is dedicated to the quest of our common humanity, especially in the exploration of the underlying commonalities of the human condition, the similarities between faith systems and philosophies, and the Druidic search for all that unifies rather than divides. This is a public forum, viewable by guests as well as members, and is cataloged by most search engines.

The term "Common Quest" does not mean that ultimately there is one faith system, or one lowest common denominator. It means that we are all trying to do the same thing: find the meaning of our existence in this common humanity that we share.

One rule for discussions here: Honor One Another.

"In death we are all equal".
So is it only life that makes us individual and different from each other?
Don't we have an individual soul?

I've heard something similar.
"Six feet of earth make all men equal."
It's a quote of someone, but I don't remember who.

Yes.

Don't we have an individual soul?

Edit: no, but we have individual souls. I have an individual soul.

I’m not sure – perhaps I’ll know when I die.

Firstly; equality does not necessarily mean uniformity; we’re all uniquely individual. Can we not be equal in value but not identical in aspect? That’s my default position until I’ve discovered the truth. :where: (Perhaps I have but don’t know it.)

Secondly; isn’t it possible that we are all part of the same soul? I quite like the idea that the universe is one consciousness, learning through the individual experiences of its components. No component has greater or lesser value: we’re all essential for the process because we each contribute in a unique way.

Thirdly – I’m still not sure.

I think we would only be equal in that we all fall under the group of "dead people". But then, we all fall into the group of "alive people" right now so I guess we are all equal now, too.

It's too simplistic; there are those who were buried in stone tombs; or cremated; or died on the snowcapped mountains. There are those who "live on" in the open tombs of Sicily; or (in Harrow) there is someone who is "buried" in a concrete coffin about 15 feet above the ground. All very different.

Enjoy this life. It would be a shame if we looked forward to the next, only to find we forgot the one before.

If it is stated that we are all equal in death, then someone thinks we are not now.
That puts up the question in which way aren't we equal now but will be in death...

Equal in value? I think we are that anyway.
Equal in the way that noone can take his/her riches with them when being dead? Yes, that is the only thing I can think of - but then, I don't care about that and for me this doesn't need to be stated (it isn't really a comforting thought for those who suffer from poverty or are envious now, is it?)

When we die we are all equal in that we no longer exist as individuals.

In life we are equal in terms of rights and responsibilities (in theory; in practice this doesn't always work).
