Children of the Earth
Here’s my offering for the eisteddfod.
https://soundcloud.com/sthomason-1/children-of-the-earth I don’t ever claim to write songs as they tend to appear in my head relatively complete and I don’t really work at them so it doesn’t seem that they’re actually “mine”; it’s more like I find them. This one is the most extreme example. The credit, in one way, should go to Jasper Lee, a Romany shaman whose biography, We Borrow the Earth, I was reading at the time. I woke up one morning from a dream in which I’d been singing this song so I rushed downstairs and carried on singing it over and over until I’d fixed it in my head. (I didn’t have any way of recording at the time so it was the only way to “fix” it.) I did, subsequently, add the last verse which I hadn’t sung in my dream. I’ve since come across many others who have dreamed tunes etc and I still do so occasionally but my dreams normally slip away too quickly to fix them.
Apologies for the beginning – the recording was made by a friend at a singaround in our local pub/club. I’d re-record it but I rather like the fact that everyone is joining in with the choruses.
