The Scouring

To stand upon the desert as the sand flies in your face
is to strip away your arrogance with the Earth's uncanny grace.

On a sea of land that stretches flat, below the empty sky
an untold length of endless years puts paid to every lie.

Each grain of sand sings endless songs of ages yet to come
like countless lives which build the land perfected in their sum.

And in each grain is perfect peace unknown by mortal men
To dance upon the sudden wind, to fly then sleep again.

I wonder if those single grains know how minute they are
Or do they view themselves as stars within a sky of stars.

Against the backdrops of such thoughts no ego can prevail
Acceding to infinity, with peace or pointless wails.

Emergence
(Gnoughish translation here)
The mud is dark
The light does not penetrate its surface
A bulge appears in the ugly mess
Pristine whiteness breaks forth
It blooms and astonishes the mud
This, the alchemy of life
Light attracts the eye
All the sense are opened
Drinking in all qualities
Explored in the soul's depths
Beauty highest of all
Imbues the vision from the soul
Expressing its depth and purity
Creating and transforming
This, the alchemy of soul
Essence of human art

Look Just Look

Look up at the sky,
Look up on the mountain peaks,
Look up on the rambling hills,
Look up on the forest of green,
Look up on all the trees,
Look up on the land and sea,
Look up on the faces of all you see
Now tell me what do you see.

What I See
White fluffy clouds drifting in a sea of blue,
Snow covered tops, cold mist billowing around,
Carpet of green moving in the wind,
Leaves of green, gold and brow,
Ships, sea gulls and waves crashing on the shore,
Sad faces and tears! people needing to stop and look for awhile.

A Simple Invocation

Mother Moon, dark or bright
Guide us safely through each night

Father Sun, bless each day
As we go about our way
The future enters into us, in order to transform itself in us, long before it happens.
- Rainer Maria Rilke
"I do not at all understand the mystery of grace - only that it meets us where we are but does not leave us where it found us." ~Anne Lamott

The Old Shepherd’s Prayer

I want a hillside full of sheep,
I thought, just to keep
my border collie in his prime,
though perhaps it was my time
I felt drifting past,
like shadow clouds upon the
waving grass.
I want a hillside full of sheep,
beneath the blue sky
as clouds and time slip by,
until at last it be that I,
like clouds, and sheep and collie,
have slipped by,
and all the world is passed,
and all the promise of the ages
there before me lie.

Morla’s Lament
(inspired by Morla’s Tale,
in Tales of Avalon)

So lonely it is
in this land of men.
If only . . . No!
I do not wish it so
(to be one of them.)
Yet there are times when
the crescent moon lies low
in a darkling sky,
times when I
almost wish to know
the sense of power
they command,
denied to our being.
The seeing of this
does not help to understand,
but makes the loneliness
all the more a
burden borne by Morla,
here, in another gender’s land.

Third & Final Entry:

Nature Lying to Nature Bare

Out of the gentle south they came;
wild winds and rain
in unexpected fury cast
upon the sleeping trees with blast
of angry nature bent
upon the purging and the wrent
of branch from limb.
Nature lying to Nature bare,
in wild, flying prunings there
in the storm-cleft dark!
Reminders stark of the power
She wields over our
lands and fields.
Yet we of nature, too, are made,
to one another we are laid
bare. And it is there,
in that wild dance, we are aware
of the plan and chance of life,
and the necessary strife
in which we share.

Coming of Autumn

Still, the mist parting,
A bow wave before a disembodied intent
Blowing under the door.

And in the back of your mind
A great ram-headed man
dissipating on the hearth
observes you, moist-eyed;

No match for the brittle council of embers
That has arisen.

Listen

And again, tearing the mist on the road
Honouring no hedges, the ghost of the storm
Absorbed, whistles softly to itself
fingering flowing patterns on the tree trunks,

Stirring leaves in the dark stream of the moonlit clouds.
The lives of three men, The life of an eagle; The lives of three eagles, The life of a yew; The lives of three yews, The length of an age. Nennius

.
Reality

…and, as I stagger past the undulations that were yesteryear,
I stop to watch the rabid wolves howling at the broken street lamp…
surrounded by the thick, green fog that condenses into ever larger drops of treacle-blood,
that falls to the ground and oozes through the cracks of a tarmac raped Earth…
to poison yet another tree,
in this foetid swamp called… ‘Reality’...!

Light

So light is fading
into an embracing dark.
The days were of beauty
never to return,
or to be revived.

The cold awaits
but in my heart
I know a future
of bright Summer-days
and piles of strawberries.

The Wheel
like a growing spiral
makes me dance
and sing
and write words
of hope
and love
and Oneness.

the sacred stone

we’ve left the sacred stone behind
we see it in the vale below
its shadow long this evening time
of light and dark; and in the glow

of this pale sunset - do we see
faint radiances where come and go
strange faerie forms about the stone
performing rites? and does that slow

unwinding of the widdershins wind
seem dragon-like sometimes? eyes glow
and flying phantoms flap like fins,
flash fleeting flecks of bright rainbow.

farewell, my love, I’m called away
it grieves my heart, i love you so
but by the light of a distant day
my body wakes, and i must go.

Isis

I met Isis by accident
on the edge of a dream
One Goddess to them all
All mothers the Earth redeem

I met Isis by accident
in the dawning of the day
She consoled me softly
and sent my on my way

I met Isis by accident
the Goddess in ten-thousand-fold
Love and life and death
she will forever hold

Guardians

That gap in the sky
Is a threat of eternal frost,
Our aching wing cowls yearn forward.

To the eye nothing has changed,
But this hole in the wind is wrong,
And must be filled.

Our sigil strikes its ragged edges,
Singing the spell of the wild geese,
Guardians of the cold black grin.

In the Goddess Temple.

In the Temple of the Goddess I rest,
In her arms I heal,
In her sacred place I find my serenity.
Here I am pure,
Here I am Me,
No expectations, no demands,
Hidden away,
In secret
I lay in Her arms
And I am restored.

Gold chiffon rivers run over my head,
Soft flames surround me.
Her image all around,
She is in everyone here,
In the love and peace we all share.
She is multifaceted,
Showing all aspects of life and death.
She is our Mother,
She is the Earth, the Sky, the Moon and the Stars.
She is the source of all life,
She is mine,
She is yours,
We are hers,
For all time.
She is Love.
