ignore list question

Postby DJ Droood » 16 Aug 2005, 12:03

A short time ago, I thought I would experiment with the ignore list.

I placed a couple of user names on it...people who annoy the crap out of me and who I figured I would never share common ideological/spiritual/moral ground with...and sat back to wait for my blood pressure to drop.

It was nice...while I still disagree with almost everything everyone says, the most egrergious examples of people who don't think like me were absent.

What I am finding, however, is that any thread an ignore list user posts to "locks up" after their post...I can't read what anyone else says either....thus forcing me to unignore them.

Is this a system deficiency or a personal deficiency?

Should I just go back to manually (visually?) ignoring people like before?

Here's another question on this topic...

Is there a way to find out if we are on somebody's ignore list? How can we change our behaviour if we don't even know we're annoying people? Frankly, I would appreciate being told if I am ever acting like a jerk.

Ambariius,

There have been many changes in the board software this year to increase security. The ignore list is part of a 3rd party addition and may not remain compatible. This is the 1st I have heard of a problem. Admins and Mods cannot put people on ignore lists, so we will be the last to notice.

Are you using subSilver as your board style?

Dair Ciúin,

It is possible, but not on a per user basis. It has to be for everyone or no-one. Though I understand how knowing could be helpful to some, we have decided not to make that information visible since it can be construed as a privacy issue. IE, what I think about someone, but do not choose to express is private.

not me...I want to live in blissful ignorance.

and another thing...is there a way to tell who is OBOD and who isn't, at least in the public forums? I don't want to ignore list any OBODies...just a select few who wander in from the streets.

If in doubt, I usually just look at their profile and see if they belong to any member user groups.

Would you change your style to subSilver and see if the "lock up" goes away.

Some of these old styles have become incompatible with certain mod features. subSilver is the default style for phpBB our software.

I wouldn't know how to use the ignore button even if I had one, but it doesn't show up on my bar at the bottom of my posts. All I see in that row is: profile, pm, and email. I don't have anyone I want to ignore, so guess it doesn't matter. :D

Dryadia,
If your board style is not subSilver, try switching to that as an experiment and see if the ignore button appears on others' posts. Not all styles will even display it.

I switched to subsilver (I usually use 'army' as I love the green color), and it still didn't show friend or ignore buttons on mine. I don't know where in profile to 'fix' it either. Is anything on my bar visible to anyone, besides the 'profile', 'pm', and 'email' buttons? Perhaps I just can't see them. It's no big deal tho.

It's located at the bottom of each non-admin, non-mod's post, between "Friend" and "PM."

Yes Azrienoch, I can see all of the buttons on your row: profile, friend, ignore, pm, email, www. But on my row, all I see is: profile, pm, and email. I don't have a clue why that's all I seem to have. Was just wondering if anyone else could see more on my row is all. I don't really care tho, as everyone is my friend, and I don't want to ignore anyone, so I don't need those buttons anyway. I just feel kinda ignorant not knowing how to fix it, or where in my profile to go to find out how.

Dryadia,
The reason you don't have an ignore button on your own posts is that you can't ignore yourself! Nothing to adjust in your profile--if there's someone you want to ignore, you just click the ignore button on that person's post to add him/her to your ignore list.
