I PM'd Lizzy regarding a way to stop MOST of em on the Save the Trees board.. But it does require Admins being active, although not all in different timezones...
On the forum I mod on, ALL new members need to be validated by an Admin BEFORE being able to post. This catches a lot of spam-bots that sign-on with names like 'sexy chickas in KAT-suit'
It also catches the people that sign on with intelligent names like 'fguemddsh'. Even if they appear to be real, they're immediately listed suspicious.
Another reason for it is that we don't allow alter-ego's on that forum and by checking the new member's IP-address ( often also the same for various spam-bots.. ) against those allready in the data-base, we catch double identities.
You wouldn't believe how many flame-wars we HAD which were from people that were 'fighting' with themselves... ridiculous..
But it IS a way... Asking for validation e-mails just doesn't work... A lot of these bots sign on and then validate themselves by confirming the e-mail 5 minutes later... VERY annoying...
