Chat room

Postby Azrienoch » 17 Feb 2004, 04:17

Is there any way we can get ahold of a javascript chat room? I think we'd save ourselves a lot of pains of disgruntled threads...

Hi Azrienoch,

There used to be a link to Jabber chat on the front page of the Obod site, but I no longer see a link there. I was able to locate it thru the What's New link: http://www.druidry.org/jabchat/login.html

I know that some of the Board members used to use this on occasion, but I don't know if they still do.

Hope this was of some help!

Hmmm, I wish we knew.
But I was suggesting a more official chat room...I've seen sites that will give you the code for one sponsored by them that could be placed on any site you wished...

Hi again!

Actually, there is an "official" chat channel for OBOD members with regularly scheduled discussions and rituals. If you are an OBOD member, you might want to contact the office about it. Because it is a "private" channel, I hesitate to put too much information here in the public portion of the Board.

Peace,
Ruadh

I think there should be a chat room for everyone you could have different rooms for different orders and so on. The whole member thing is cool but what if you dont have the muny to be a member to buy the starter pcks then you dont get to experiance all of the fun. I can understand that the muny helps the order to grow n etc but if their is a chat room it should be open to all. blessings xx

Well, as it was told to me by Kernos, there needs to be constant ovate or above supervision, which really is nearly impossible. The chat room mentioned above is a good place to chat to someone when you've pre-set a time to get together there. I'd suggest just going and getting some sort of instant messenger.

Why isn´t there a chatroom for the public, for guests and registered users, who are not in OBOD? I feel very closed to the druidry way but caused of a few problems I´m not able to join into OBOD, so I´ve no change to discuss my opinions and for guests there is no ability to get questions answered directly. I think it´s our chance to make our standings common and to get more people interessted and take away fear of them.

Chat rooms

Postby Merlyn » 16 Jun 2004, 13:19

Sure,
We could have a few chat rooms:

One could be called.."off line party chat" > Like the foggy duck
and another.............."Ask a Druid" >for answers to life's questions
or even.................... "The flame room" :-) > to settle arguments
How about................ "Gossip alley" > when you just gotta gossip
then.......................... "Cyber circle rite room">a place of magic spells
(Please, don't go and open these rooms, it's just a tad of humor) But often enough it seems people would want these chat rooms.

blessed be

We cannot have an official OBOD chat room, unless it can be moderated 24/7 by Ovate or Druid members of OBOD and as they say, "that ain't gonna happen".

However, there is not reason we cannot have Druid chat, open to the public that is not under the auspices of OBOD.

There are many forums that support online chat, including Yahoo, IRC, AIM etc. The most compatible and easy to use is AIM (AOL instant messenger) and one does not have to be an AOL member.

The most versitile is IRC, though it is the most complex to use.

I would also be willing to host a chat - JAVA or CGI - on kernunnos.com, but need advice and probably help configuring a FREE chat program.

I can install Jabberchat on Kernunnos.com is you all think that is sufficient.

The only problem with Jabberchat is that it is very slow. The last time I used it, anywhere from 5-15 or more seconds passed between the time I hit "send" and the time my message appeared on screen. It's manageable (just) when only two people are trying to converse but it rapidly gets confusing if a group is present.

Agreed, Selene

I have found a PHP/MySQL chat, but have not had time to figure it out.

JAVA tend to be slow and clunky, IMO, esp the free stuff.

Does anyone know of a good free chat CGI?

Yes, there's a really simple-to-set-up one at http://www.freejavachat.com/

You configure the options, press GO, then copy the html code to your server. Take a look at http://earthpulse.org.uk/chat.shtml - it took me literally two minutes to set up, and I'm sure a more elaborate looking one would only take a few minutes longer.

Hope that helps,

Hi kernos,

I run ThePaganVoice's chat room, it is IRC based and comes with an easily used java front end.

I'd be more than happy to offer advice.. and even set it up for you. Oh and it's free :)

Just ask

Found a whizzo CGI script like you wanted, Kernos. :attention:

Look at http://cgiirc.sourceforge.net/

It's a snap to install. See it in action at http://earthpulse.org.uk/cgi-bin/irc.cgi

Proper IRC, and none of that Java nonsense!

You must be converting EarthpulseChat, UG. I am getting a 404 om http://earthpulse.org.uk/chat.shtml and I am timing out on http://earthpulse.org.uk/cgi-bin/irc.cgi

Please email me when it is up and running. Your JAVA frontend and the one Haki wrote seem to work well. What I like is that one can use a full featured IRC client to access the chat or use the browser if one is inexperienced.

The main problem I had with IRC is overloaded servers, esp in the evenings. But, I have not really used IRC regularly for several years. Can we get on a reliable server?

Ok, the web pages are done.

They're not in their final place, and so this is just on a temporary server.

But have a look at http://www.mywx.info/chat/chat.html

Detailed there is how to use an IRC client to connect, how to use a java based web page to connect, and also how to get the java if you don't already have it.

The beauty of the java applet is that you can save the web page to your own PC, change the java applet code (VERY easy) and run it from your own PC.

Enjoy

I would just like to add my vote for some kind of chat room for members and non members alike if possible, i was just looking for one this evening and both surprised and saddened at it's absence.

Surely some members might take on the moderating?
