Animal section

Postby LadyMoonChaser » 26 Jul 2004, 19:35

Hi Kernos! :mracorn:

I know how busy you are but I have a suggestion that you may want to take into consideration.

I posted something relating to grapes & raisins being toxic to dogs in the H&H section, because I wasn't really sure where it should go.

However, I know a lot of the people here have pets and love animals as much as I do, since I've seen many people post about them. Not to mention that druids have always held animals in a special place on this planet. :D

Sooooo, I was wondering if it would be possible to set up a separate heading just for pet/animal issues. It just doesn't seem quite right to put things relating to pets in the H&H thread.

I'll even include a poll to see how many people think it would be a good idea to help in your decision! I'd like to make this as easy for you as possible. I would also be happy to moderate if you would like me to.

Thanks and Blessings!

Hiya LMC!

I like your idea! Lots of folks have made this Board like a second home and many of us have companion animals, so it sure makes sense to me!

Peace,

There is a sense among many that there are already too many forums and we are resisting adding new ones.

That said, I think this is an appropriate request. But, I wonder if we could combine it with another forum. I am changing the poll to reflect this idea.

What would y'all think of changing Greening Gaia to a Plants and Animals or Fauna and Flora Forum.

I would really like to know what the active principal in raisons is!? I have also heard that dogs should not be given chocolate (or was it parrots)?

Kernos,
Dogs should not be given parrots, either.

From what I can tell, the raisin toxicity may be due to their high iron content. Apparently iron overload can cause renal failure in both dogs and birds.

I'd really prefer having a separate pets or companion animal forum. I understand the clutter problem but the two subjects are pretty dissimilar.

:-) :-) GOOD ONE SELENE!!!!!!!!!! "Dogs should not be given parrots either!!" ROFLMAO!!!!!!!

But, actually, it IS chocolate that is not good for doggies either. And Selene can probably give you the reason why!

Anyway, Kernos, I have to agree with Selene, WE WANT OUR OWN PET FORUM!!!

Don't you think that animals are a VERY important part of the druid culture, AND many people's lives....
what is the big deal about adding another forum? And if you check the poll results, it looks as if there is definitely a majority that want it separate from the GG, or a P&A or F&F!

However, if need be, we can wait to see what more people have to say about it.

And congrats to you Fearn on your new babies!! I love parakeets too!

And HIYA R!!! I NEVER know when I'm going to run into you!! but always a pleasure :D !!

Ok, K, we will try to be patient about this and try not to bug you about it....too much!

What about modifying Greening Gaia to Mother Nature or just GAIA or, in our langauge - Papatuanuku......or Nature

Hmmmm words are a funny thing

trying to find a way to talk about a forum that embraces LIFE - that which is around us and which feeds us without imposed separation

I adore my pets, but agree that the board is already unwieldy with so many different forums. I often don't have a lot of time to scan the board each day, and I have to click in and out of one room after another to see what's being discussed... and on weekdays there's usually only one or two threads that have been added to in each room.

If anything I'd like to see the board streamlined! I think opening up the description of what is now "Greening Gaia" to make it the clear place for pet topics would work just fine.

I think Greening Gaia is a good place to talk about animals, not just pets. The animal kingdom is part of Greening Gaia anyhow and we already discuss nature and wildlife in there, so why not have a section on pets as well,
It should liven the forum up a bit dont you think?
Well done Lady MoonChaser :mracorn:

Greening Gaia

Postby Merlyn » 27 Jul 2004, 19:39

True the title of the Greening Gaia forum is "missing the point" for too many. It's reason for the title was all about environmental issues.

Perhaps "plants and animals?"

Our environment and animal realms?

Hi Folks,

No offense meant, but I have to disagree with using the Greening Gaia forum for discussions on our companion animals.

There is a big difference between what we do for the environment/wild creatures/etc and what we do for our immediate families - which for many of us includes our companion animals.

If a forum must be changed to accomodate discussions on companion animals, perhaps the Health and Healing forum would be the better choice.

There may be other options also.....if the sheer number of forums is becoming unwieldy, there are a few forums that have very little activity (in comparison to other forums). For example, the Groves and Seedgroups forum could be combined with the OBOD General Discussion forum and OBOD Camps and Festivals forum.

Perhaps we could try a separate forum for companion animals for awhile to see how it goes? If it doesn't get alot of posts, then it probably should be included with another forum. But I have to tell you....I belong to several Yahoo groups concerning the health of cats and dogs. One group just started early this year and it is strictly about cat nutrition. This group has less than 200 members, but it already has nearly 8000 posts!

Companion animal health and nutrition are very important topics to many of us - especially those of us with companion animals suffering with major health problems.

I hope you will reconsider LMC's request for a separate forum.

Peace,
Ruadh

Ruadh,

Where would you suggest discussing animals (pets or otherwise). I have essentially been told that we have enough forums. Resistance to adding a new one will be strong.

Using that as a given, how can we modify names of forums or their descriptions to guide people where to post topics about animals?

Hi Kernos,

The Greening Gaia forum, in my mind, works very well for environmental and wild animal issues, but just doesn't seem the right place to discuss our companion animals that are often considered to be family members.

Since there are already too many forums, if someone would like to discuss companion animal issues, the Health and Healing forum seems like the next best place to me. Or.....I could direct them to some really good Yahoo groups..... (just kidding!)

The description for the forum could be changed to mention that topics may include companion animal health and healing.

Thanks!
