Every time I log in to the boards, I select the Log me on automatically each visit checkbox, but I never am. What am I missing?

Thanks, and have a Happy New Year! :champ:

I have that problem on my work computer, XP, but not on my home computer, running Win98. It is a bummer for you. All I can suggest is you try another web browser and see what happens with that on your system.

I've only had this problem since the boards were locked down several months ago. Can't remember what happened, I think it was due to trolls. But ever since then, I've never been able to auto-log in. I'm on XP, but I never used to have this problem before. So I just log in manually every time now.

You must have cookies enabled for the automatic login to work.

I have XP, cookies enabled, and the automatic login never works for me.
If I"m responding to a post letting me know there's a new post on a thread I'm watching, I'm automatically logged in. No other time.

Not sure it's an XP issue; I have XP and have never had problems with the automatic login.

I have XP too and no problems. The only time I've ever had automatic login problems is with hotmail. But that's only when there are cookies stored for two different accounts and the browser doesn't know which one to use. Are there two OBOD users on your computer? Have you tried deleting your cookies and re-signing in?

Good luck, I know it's annoying.

I always had to log in every time with IE but don't have to with Mozilla, so it might be worth giving it a try with a different browser.

I have cookies enabled. And its only on this forum that I have the problem. All my other auto logins work. Just not the OBOD board.

I have the same problem, on one of my two computers,
Both run Xp. I cleaned out the cookie jar on my office computer and I have had to log in manually ever since. I set the cookie back in and allowed all cookies from this site and it worked for a few times and then resumed making me log in manually.
This all began when the OakWyse issue got bad. Normally I could lower the firewall, set the cookie and all worked fine. Some of the updates to Xp no longer allow cookies from programs like this to stop people from hacking your computer. This message board program crosses security lines set my XP programming.
It's not the XP firewall, nor is it the Norton firewall. It is the level set in "internet acess" that stops this automatic log in.

Cheers!
Merlyn

Merlyn - thanks for the info.

I wonder if you could be more explicit — sort of a primer for XP users to be showcased in the Board announcements. One should be able to configure a computer (even one running Windows) so that a choice is given to accept & store, accept and dont store or reject cookies, site by site.

I get faint when I get near a Windows computer so know little about how they work and have never seen XP in action. May I send XP troubleshooting questions to you?

Is the an issue that has occurred since SP2 - which broke many programs.

I wonder if Mac OS X users (non AOL users) have problems staying logged in. BTW on this board, 20% of pageviews are from Mac users.

Hi Kernos,
I have been a busy old painter this past week or so, but now time will allow me to dig into this and solve it.
I have a few issues needing work. Seems the original cookie on one of my computers still works fine with the same software and fire wall, yet on this computer that original cookie was removed and I must log-in each time. But... the very similar board "the foggy duck" does not have this problem on this computer. Soooo.... it is specific to this board only.
You have this board set on a Mac? I expect this might be a clue.
It might be that the host computer is not communicating correctly through it's firewall when we try to re-set the cookie.
Thoughts?

Hi,

I"m not computer expert! however, in my XP program, when I go to Edit, > Preferences> Privacy and Security > cookies there are several options, including allow them for some sites and not others.

BTW, that didn't help me here but I don't consider it a big problem, more the mosquito variety of minor annoyance.

No the software is run from a Linux server which hosts druidry.org in California.

The login problems are user config probs or AOL problems.

One thing - if your IP address changes during a session, you will be asked to login again.

In IE 6:
Go to Tools>Internet Options>Privacy
and select Web Sites>Edit
In the Address of Website window type: druidry.org then click allow.
Then click OK and OK again. This should override the default cookie handling and allow the druidry.org cookie to work.

Also:
Go to Tools>Internet Options>Privacy
and select Settings>Advanced
Select Override automatic cookie handling and Always allow session cookies.
Then click OK and OK again.

Kernos,

Also check the cookie settings in Configuration in the phpBB console. I have had the Cookie Path change on a couple of boards which caused problems for everyone.

Thanks for the info ED. The cookie settings are the defaults which they have been since day 1.

The cookie path is '/'

I tried both

In IE 6:
Go to Tools>Internet Options>Privacy
and select Web Sites>Edit
In the Address of Website window type: druidry.org then click allow.
Then click OK and OK again. This should override the default cookie handling and allow the druidry.org cookie to work.

Also:
Go to Tools>Internet Options>Privacy
and select Settings>Advanced
Select Override automatic cookie handling and Always allow session cookies.
Then click OK and OK again.

But neither helped.
I use the microsoft web browser, no aol (ever) or any other browser.
I use two other boards just like this one and they both work fine, and log in automaticaly.,

The problem is not in my computer at all, sorry, it is in this board only.

Merlyn,

I have to differ with you on this one. On my systems with XP Professional SP2 and all the Micro$$ security patches, automatic login does not work for any of the boards that I belong to or manage if I use IE. Mozilla Firefox works for all of them. So it seems that there is an issue with one of the security patches for XP. And possibly other OS versions from Microsoft.

I have almost stopped using IE for web browsing as it is just too much of a bother. Forefox is totally HTML and CSS complient where IE is not and it just works. I find with IE that for about 5 minutes after closing the browser I can auto login to the same site. Any longer and it does not work.
