Spell check

Postby LadyMoonChaser » 06 Jan 2005, 00:56

Hi K

Just wondering if there would be some way to add a spell checker for posting. I have no problem with it, but I do know that there are some people who have a hard time with their English, understandably, but don't have the time to go to another program to type their post & then do a spell chk & then copy & paste here. And I know it can be a bit embarrassing for some if they are in a serious discussion & after they've posted & it's been sitting there for a while & then they realize they made a big spelling booboo. (well, actually it HAS happened to me when I wasn't quite sure how to spell a word, spelled it the way I thought & then later realized I spelled it wrong & felt like such a duh!)

Anyway, I have no clue what that would involve to add something like that & if anyone even thinks it is necessary, but just thought I'd mention it.

Thanks :-D

OH, and also, the new emoticons of the bearded faces are cute but I don't think the ladies want to use them(unless they have beards, ..which is fine by me..lol)...and I think the ladies like to use emoticons more than the guys..... just wondered if you could move those to the other page & bring back some of the ones you moved..... :???: altho, I DO like the new devil face....hehe

I would love to have a spellcheck if it is possible but may be complicated for this forum.

OR, maybe I'll just train my cat to type for me...

I personally like this one for the new emoticons :spider:

Hi, LMC.
Are you referring to the new emoticons like these? :x :D |-) That's supposed to be a beveled or embossed effect, not a beard!

Spell Check

Postby Merlyn » 06 Jan 2005, 05:30

I think spell check can work, but it would have to be 'linked' to your own office or word program. To add it to this one would be a major up load each time you log on.
My browser uses my 'word' spell check, for example.

What a pity...- being a non-native speaker and perfectionist - I would have supported LadyMoonChaser's request...

Hi Fiery Arrow,
It could be done :) and I agree, it would be a great help.
Right now I 'cut & paste' what I write into my word program, spell check, and then cut & paste the spell checked post back into the window.

There's also the problem of which "english" to use for spell checking. :)

American & British spellings for certain words are not the same, ie:

color - colour
center - centre
grammer - grammar
theater - theatre
donut - doughnut
check - cheque

So, which type of spelling? Canada officially uses British spelling.

I draft in Word before posting just for the spellcheck feature and do not find it burdensom. On the other hand, we could all just post in Welsh and then not one in 100, including native speakers, would have a clue whether the spelling was correct or not! ( I shall now remove my tongue from my cheek and go back to my corner.:)

I spellcheck in word as well, but I have to adjust the "language" to UK English. The default is US English. Damn annoying since Canadian spellings are based on UK spelling.

Absolutely "nuffin" wrong with your English, SummerBlooms. I read your posts thinking of a Kiwi accent in any case so how you typed it isn't important!!!

I Have looked at a couple of Spellcheck mods, and the one's I have found either did not seem compatible or required linking to external sites.

Mac users using Safari have a built-in spell checker. Control-click on words underlined in red and choose the correct suggested spelling.

Mozilla and Firefox both have spelling extensions. http://spellbound.sourceforge.net/

Of course there are lots of programs that do spell checking across multiple applications

I'm not sure if your host/server supports pspell (a quick phpinfo() page will tell you). However, if it does, there is a mod called phpSpell which integrates nicely with phpBB, and I've used it on a few sites (such as http://www.evolutionwriters.com/forums/).

Feel free to PM me if you have questions about it.

Peace,

Morgan.

I am preparing to do a clean install of the current PHPBB and re-do the mods and board styles. Errors have accumulated since to 2.0.11 update and it is time. I need to figure out how the existing MySQL database will handle this as a number of MODs have created new tables.

The mods, I would like to keep are

Easy Mod
Quick Reply
Profile Control Panel
Redirect anonymous users to login
Smiles Order
Log Actions Mod (this stopped working in Feb - logs all moderator actions)
Multivote mod (so one can vote for more than one choice)
Ignore Users mod

I can certainly consider a spell check mod. If anyone have other mod suggestions, please let me know. Also any advice doing clean install is greatly appreciated.

I have figured the PHPBB/MySQL interaction out from a user standpoint and can do manual mods (I was always good at following directions), but I do not program in either PHP or MySQL.

Cheers,

Kernos

I've been dealing with upgrading several phpBBs lately myself as well. If you need some help, feel free to email me off the boards and I'll assist in any way possible. I am a PHP programmer and a SQL administrator (I use MySQL and PostgreSQL).

phpBB is great in how flexible it is to mod. Unfortunately, that flexibility comes around to bite you when you need to upgrade, more often than not, especially if you use any large mods (the thorn in my side is the one that allows threading, ala Usenet style). Supposedly 3.0 is going to make upgrading easier with mods installed.

For those using Internet Explorer there is a free spell check add-in at http://www.iespell.com/ . I have used it for a year or so and it works quite well - if you remember to use it! It adds a spell check icon on the tool bar and allows adding words to a custom dictionary. It is freeware.

If you download the Google Toolbar (here), that has a spell-check function in it that can be used for web forms, including forums.

It's what I use and it's pretty good and easy to use.
