I think the articles are correct, but miss a few points.
Why would people be in a state of distrust?
IMO the climate debate suffers from other recent damming lies. The environment of distrust stems from many recent things like 9-11 and the Iraq war, the continued stalemate of bickering and lack of action on key issues during this recession and a side order of apocalyptic theater.
Walter Cronkite kind of trust in media is long gone, and we face a hyped, in our face style of news often correcting itself as the story unfolds.
I feel this has fed into the global warming issues, and the scientists personal lives will be put on display like Tiger Woods, The Clinton's, GWB and so many more.
In essence, the emissions issue is in an environment of distrust, heckled by all sides.
This article does point out how the IPCC faltered in this circus of media, with the many venues creating a background noise most people just do not trust.
This article does not point to the more serious issue of "playing with the gang" that the IPCC endeavored to do, and found itself unprepared to deal with.
However these are as the article mentions, learning curve issues. They are many, complex in some ways, yet needs for direction and clarity is still vital.
Of the fear mongering issues that generate distrust, also not in this article, is the associated lack of solutions.
The repeated and prolonged message of alarm-ism will fail even if it is understood, if the same efforts are not put into direct solutions in an even campaign of scientific research.
2,500 scientists are plenty to be sure, and in essence I feel that to gain trust, they need to redirect their efforts in proving out solutions so that governments can no longer hide the truths we all know, which result in the inaction we so long have suffered from.
Of all the times in human economic history, now is one we sorely need good solutions for.
For trust in the problem, we must move past the drum beating. It eventually will fall on deaf ears no matter.
