So what does everyone play?

Postby Oaken_Boken » 05 Sep 2007, 19:08

Just a little topic to share a bit about what strikes us hardest: our musical preferences. Not so much what we listen to, but for those of us that unwind by striking a chord or jamming a rythym, maybe beating on some drums. I'll go ahead and start.

I myself have played guitar for about 5 years on and off, and bass for about 2 years. I have absolutely zilch skills at percussion instruments for some reason, but I really wish I could even play small hand drums, heh. I have owned a few guitars in my time, but the only one I still have is my Martin DXM Acoustic, and I recently sold my Ibanez SR505, a five string bass. The neck was pretty thick and it made my hand cramp up, so I got rid of it. I'm looking into getting a 12 string acoustic, so if anyone has some suggestions they'd be greatly appreciated!

Blessed Be!

Hello There
I play the guitar , usually in some bizzare tuning . I don't play electric anymore but I used to be able to make an astounding noise sometimes(Peavy 175 watt amp through a Laney 4x4 Bass Cab!!WOOOOSH!) I used to play bass sometimes too , and in a couple of bands keyboards(though not actually music - more spacey drones like Del Dettmar/Dikmik etc) Had a 12 string for a while but coudn't get on with it . I am officially the worlds worst drummer .

I play a little bit of classical guitar. Although, I have always wanted to play a 12-string like Leo Kottke. Currently, thinking of trying to pick up a bodhran.

12 string guitar is my weapon of choice. I have 2, partly so I can set one up in my alternative tuning. I also play the 6 string, a little mandolin and bozouki, also harp (small) and a bit of hand drumming. I also sing unaccompanied.

You wouldn't happen to recommend any brands when it comes to 12 string eh? I'm looking into probably getting an Alvarez, but i'm a bit partial to that brand in general. Mind you i'm not looking to spend more than about $600, so I obviously can't afford a Martin or Gretsh :)

Drummer of 8 yrs, Guitarist of 3yrs, singer since i found out I can sing (mezzo soprano).

Most play all sorts of metal on drums and guitar, but operatic power metal/power metal on vox.

Can't help with brand names, I'm afraid. I play a Takemine and a Seagull. My only advice would be to go and play a fair few see which feel good. If you get one with some electrics make sure you hear them flat through a suitable amp. If you use a plectrum or a capo take them with you when you go shopping. And most important, get some one else to play it whilst you walk around the shop. They sound VERY different from behind!

I used to play classical piano, and I still do sometimes, but only baroque pieces. I love 'suites' of dances, and I would like to own a spinet (small harpsichord) one day.

But at the moment (uhm...the last three years) I am more occupied with playing different kinds of flutes. I play tin whistle and low whistle, and recorders. Here is a picture of my beauty, a renaissance type alto recorder:

I started out on flute in elementary school, then moved to bassoon in high school when there were too many flute players (we breed like rabbits, it seems). I picked up baritone saxophone for jazz band and oboe just for the heck of it, and went through the obligatory piano lessons as a kid...

I majored in music education in college and learned to play French horn for the marching band and contrabassoon in the orchestra. Lately I've picked up the harp and tin whistle, though I'm not really great at either one. Since I didn't stick with my chosen major and I don't play professionally anymore, it seems like playing music has kind of fallen by the wayside. I need to start playing again...

I play the flute (and sometimes piccolo) in a symphonic wind orchestra.
I have the luck that the orchestra I play in is quite good, and that can be an enormous magical experience :) :yay: :cloud9:

i know most basics on the violin. i took lessons. i'd like to learn how to play celtic music on it.
I am not afraid of death, i welcome it. it is the phsical and emotion PAIN that scares me.
the only thing worse is eternal life.

Every one is the same, and every one is different. think of us how you want to. but the basic nature of people is same. through race, through cluture, through opinion, through beleif, though currency. and the only way people should be juged is by skill. and you can get what you want out of people by putting a quarter or 2 into the coin slot.

dont knock at deaths door; ring the door bell and run (he hates that)

you cant solve a problem with murderers by becomeing one. or as i would wish to scream at my older brother:

We should get together a virtual folk night! Each can post a tune or song, not to win harps but simply to share!

Have people got access to recording stuff? Could some one talk us through how to post audio?

Hi!

I can't read music so 'play by ear' as they say! I'll have a go at guitar, penny whistle and bodhran when I'm having a 'diddleydee' moment! (Nice memories of tooting out a tune or two on the whistle whilst wandering a Scottish forest and Avebury with hubby, children and our friend tooting too). :)

I bought a budget-price 22-string harp from Hobgoblin to play around on too. There's no way I can master that (especially playing all 'proper like' with two hands! :-( ), but I can knock out a little tune on it, if I give it a go. :) Luckily, harps sound wonderful even if you can't play properly. Very restful just idly brushing the strings whilst pondering the Universe. :D

I've also got (greedy I am!!!) an octave mandola which I would like to learn to play properly. Can anyone recommend a good tuition book for the harp or mandola?

For the harp, Sylvia Woods' "Teach yourself to play the folk harp" (google finds her online shop). I'd highly recommend the book/DVD combination (or video cassette if you prefer). A bit old-fashioned, but time-tested, and very clear instructions, especially on the videos.

That said, I learned to play the harp without any book or teacher, just using my ears, but I had a solid background in music theory and a few other instruments.

Harp on :)
