I'm classically trained in cello and have been playing for 15 years, though now it often sits calling to me in the corner of my house. I play guitar much more often. I also am learning mandolin and know a little flute, harp, piano and drums. I do miss playing with others. It's been at least five years.

I'm a bassist with cello-envy! And violin envy!

I bought an upright bass and now have no one to play it with, so it sits in a corner collecting dust. How sad!

I simply LOOOOVVE the sound of cello, and after listening to celtic music I want more than ever to play the violin/fiddle. And to sing.

But for now - I'm a bassist.
Also took piano lessons and plunk around at that a bit.
I have a knack for music it seems, and can play by ear any instrument withing an hour of picking it up.

I play the guitar, or at least I'm learning. I started because it's a lot easier to sing with a guitar than with drums (which I also play). I can play a tiny bit of piano too. At the moment I'm doing quite a lot of mixing and music technology, but I'm told that there's no skill it that...

I play six and twelve string guitars, fretted and fretless bass guitar, bouzouki/octave mandolin, bodhran. I've been playing bass for over 40 years and guitar for about 20, currently playing solo acoustic guitar (with vocals) and with two bands, Wyldefyre and Celtic Mayhem on the US renaissance faire circuit.

I've been neo-pagan since 1970 and studying druidry for a couple of years - currently working on the OBOD Bardic Grade study program.

Song samples and links to CDs are at: http://www.wyldefyre.com

Bright blessings,

Wow what a multi-talented lot!

For the record I play penny whistle and low whistle, bagpipes (3 different types), pibgorn (ancient Welsh hornpipe), bombarde (deafeningly offensive Breton folk oboe), prillar horn (cow horn trumpet with finger holes), various other whistles and flutes to varying degrees of proficiency (willow flute, harjedalspipa, spilapipa, gemshorn, recorder), jouhikko & gue (bowed lyres), bodhran and hand drums.

I also tinker with mandolin (enough chords for a song or two), fiddle (just English tunes and Morris), didjeridu, kantele and lyre.

I would like to learn moraharpa and fujara...

How many instruments does a musician need? Just one more...

And thanks to Corwen, I now have an oxhorn which did a fine job of calling to the gates of the West last Samhain.

A thoroughly nice guy - check out his site if you're at all interested in strange instruments.

Well gee thanks

One of the nicest things about making instruments is hearing about the adventures your little creations have had, as I'm sure all the other instrument makers on this board would agree. Glad the horn is useful Mwyalchen :)

I have a little plastic four hole ocarina in D that might be easier to learn on Paul, let me know if you'd like me to pop it in the post to you. Looking forward to your gig BTW!

Asthma must be hard for a wind player. :-(

but maybe it gives you a certain Stevie Nicks quality when you sing?

Thank you Corwen... I am not sure about that though  I did a lot of breathing exercises when and used to sing in folk groups and sometimes .... night clubs... but the smoke got to me..... But I can't stop singing... so I sing in the car, in the garden in the GRove.... wherever people don't shout at me to stop....

Sometimes I can't hold a note as long as I should but who cares anymore I am singing! :curtsey:

Absolutely!

IMO the smoking ban is wonderful for us folk musicians and singers. As long as they don't ban the beer! :gulp:

Ive been playing guitar off and on for over 20 years. Im self taught and dont read a lick of music. Mostly electric and some acoustic. My main guitar right now is an Ibanez RG450 but I also like to play my Gibson acoustic. I am thinking about getting something from the Muse line of Luna guitars. I like the Celtic flavor on those.
I've also recently become interested in the bodhran after seeing the The Rogues play at the local Ren Faire.

I can recommend Sean Jones's bagpipes, they are beautiful sounding and looking, plus easy to play and maintain thanks to plastic reeds.
