Gosh! That is hard. I might say what I don't like is a shorter list --- Fusion Jazz, Hip Hop, Rap, most PoP music. I hate Duran Duran, The Thompson Twins, and most of the Alternative crap of the 80s. (Adam Ant, Loverboy, George Michael and Wham!, Madona, etc.) And Disco. I don't like disco, but darn if that beat isn't infectious.

:)

I was raised on the Kingston Trio, Glenn Yarbourough, The Limeliters, The Smothers Brothers, etc. My parents were more of the Beatnik generation, but still young enough that we listened to alot of Peter, Paul & Mary, Bob Dylan, John Denver, etc. I knew all the words to all the songs in Hair by the time I was in 1st grade. My dad was a folk/blue grass musician who also played a mean Spanish style classic guitar. By mean, I mean that literally! He whapped me upside the head with a Guild 12-String in 1974. Yeowch!

My iPod on shuffle is very confused...

My music collection consists of:

Rock (60s/70s Deep Purple, Allman Brothers, Uriah Heep, etc. etc. etc.)
Metal (Pantera, Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, Motorhead)
World (Omnia, Prem Joshua, African folk music)
Blues (Chicago and Delta are my fav styles, I have a lovely collection on my iPod, Billie Holliday)
Country (George Strait, Merle Haggard, Tex Ritter [don't laugh], Hank, Sr., Hank, Jr., Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash)
Folk (Peter Paul & Mary, Huddy Ledbetter, Limeliters, Kingston Trio, John Denver, Smothers Brothers, Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie, Gordon Lightfood, Joni Mitchell. AND MORE!!!)
Classical (Mozart is my favorite, Berlioz, Gershwin, Segovia)
Big Band (Glenn Miller, Dorsey, Goodman, etc.)
Blue Grass
Grunge (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Temple of the Dog...)
Funk (George Clinton, Parliament, Ohio Players, Morris Day & The Time, Sly & The Family Stone)
Punk/Alternative ( Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Presidents of the United States of America,
Individuals: Prince, ,Stevie Ray Vaughn, KT Tunstall, Eric Clapton (I have a lovely Clapton collection),Neil Young)
Oldies (Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Junior, )
Deep Purple --- I had ALL their albums, even ones released only in Europe. I also had every incarnation...Blackmore's Rainbow, Rainbow, Ritchie Blackmore & Rainbow. I will admit it here, only if you promise not to tell, that my #1 idol of my teen years was Ritchie Blackmore. When Blackmore's Night was here locally, I was horrified to find out AFTER the fact.
for now,
Rebecca

I love your list, blodyn! My tastes are very eclectic, too. I spent many an hour in Texas honky tonks when I was growing up, so I totally "get" country music.

I don't know how to use an I-Pod (yet), and when I moved about a year ago, I got rid of all of my vinyl. Oh, the pain!! But if anyone had seen that collection or listened to one of my zillions of custom tapes, they'd find a bit of everything:

In no particular order:

Fleetwood Mac
Annie Lennox
The Eurythmics
Jefferson Airplane
Jimi Hendrix
The Doors
Bob Dylan (I had every album but the bootleg)
The Beatles (later stuff)
Ry Cooder
U2
Dire Straits
The Who
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Bob Seger
Marcia Ball
Duffy
Jim Croce
Chuck Berry
Bonnie Raitt
Linda Ronstadt
Sarah McLachlan
The Moody Blues
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Delbert McClinton
The Fabulous Thunderbirds
The Amazing Rhythm Aces
Aretha Franklin
Buddy Holly
The Temptations
Patsy Cline
Ray Price
George Strait
Hank Thompson
Bob Wills
Asleep at the Wheel
Guy Clark
Willie Nelson
The Kinks
B.B. King
Steve Earle
Randy Newman
Steve Goodman
Janis Joplin
Lots of chamber music:
Schubert piano trios
Beethoven -- all chamber music except woodwinds
Mozart -- string quartets
I have a [i]lot[i] of classical of all types, but the majority is chamber
And finally:
Enya -- everything
Selected "New Age" stuff that leans toward Celtic influences; not too keen on reels & jigs,
however. Like the peaceful and even mournful Celtic music.
"...some part of me is tree." -- Stephanie Kaza (Buddhist author)

"It takes courage to live ordinary lives." -- Connie Schultz (newspaper columnist)

I should be working but this looked like fun, and I've already got some ideas from reading other ppl's lists. I found a lot this stuff because I was looking for 'real' bards. ie ppl who carry a tradition forward, with awareness that this is what they're doing. Some of it I grew up with:

Habib Koite
Oumou Sangare
Emily Smith
Bob Dylan
Bessie Smith
The Chieftains
Fairport Convention
Steeleye Span
The Tolkien Ensemble
Django Reinhardt
Lollo Meier
Ritary Gaguenetti Quartet
Tcha Limberger
Rokia Traore
Pink Floyd
Scott Joplin
Ali Farka Toure
John Lee Hooker
Qi Qin (Chyi Chin)
Hei Bao (Black Panther)
Tang Dynasty
Cui Jian
The Jam
T-Rex
The Clash
Echo and the Bunnymen
Adb al-Halim al-Hafez
Fairouz
Bach
Sequentia
John Dowland
Elgar
Vaughan Williams
Handel
Thomas Tallis
Purcell

...a lot of Mandarin pop
...most eighties pop
...most early English stuff, madrigals, plainchant, etc
...anything from the djembe masters of Mali/Senegal
...any Shanghai jazz/popular standards from the 1930s

blessings and musical enjoyment to all

Too many and probably too obscure to list (mostly just local singers in live settings), plus it depends a bit on my mood! Nevertheless I thought I’d flag up this particular song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKKJzzChzRQ The author, Graeme Miles, died on 29th April though immortality is assured by this song (which is sung all over the “folk world”) if nothing else.

(Take the time to listen to the lyrics with your eyes closed.)

Music is my life, so with 36485 tunes in my collection, I'm hard pressed to make a short list.
I couldn't even name my favourite genres in a list of 10... let alone the bands or solo artists I consider best from all of them... then there are those one can't "pidgeon hole" into specific genres...

Easier to say everything from Abba, through to ZZ Top, and most things inbetween really.

Not a huge fan of line dancing style Country & Western, to be honest, or Cleo Laine style rambling "scat" Jazz :-| where all the musicians seem to be playing from different music sheets :-|

Well I guess we all have our "bottom lines" somewhere or other when it comes to taste... :???: I've no doubt there will be some reading this saying Abba - oh no..............!!!

One person who stands out above all the rest for me is the late great and much missed Garry Moore.... his guitar playing on "still got the blues for you" and "Parisienne walkways" affects parts of me I can't tell you about, coz they make me blush...!

Hendrix made an impact on my youth, but not so much now I'm getting on a bit....

and I will always be totally devoted to Robert Plant - the man is a God, and can do no wrong in my eyes, I wish I'd had his babies but I digress...

the voice of Annie Lennox sends chills down my spine... in a good way... as does the late great Janis Joplin...

I tend to listen to a lot of Celtic sounding stuff lately, like Enya, Loreena McKenitt, and Pagan Folk like SJ Tucker, Lisa Thiel and Damh The Bard, on account they help me with my harp lessons :)

And when I'm in the right mood, a bit of a loud freak out to the likes of Linkin Park, Queens of the Stoneage, Foo Fighters, Disturbed, Korn, Evanescence, Within Temptation, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cult, Dead Can Dance and that kind of thing never goes amiss... :yay: :yay: :yay:

well I better stop there while there's still some daylight left
Blessed is my lady, Elen of the Ways
