It still protects your intelletual property rights, but can allow people to copy and use your work freely (so long as they credit it and apply the same creative commons notice to it.... for example).
In any case, have a look at http://creativecommons.org They have sections for images, text, video, audio, etc.
I'm going to be looking into applying it to my poetry.
