in search of the hidden

Postby veraxcustos » 23 Feb 2007, 20:38

hi i live in scotland and am trying to find aincent sacred sites if anyone knows of any please let me know especially near lossiemouth.

As a side note while i was home visiting my parents in Norfolk just I visited some of my old haunts, in the apptly named Wayland wood just outside Watton. when i sat in a clearing i used to visit often when i met a rather refined old gentleman who told me some of the history of the spot i was in. it is a circular chalk patch with a single flat bolder in the centre
apparently according to this old man this area got its name from being one of the sites that The smith Wayland used for forging his swords. the strange thing was when i left the clearing there was no trace that anyone else had been there no footprints or boot marks in the chalk

Hiya - the other thing to do, alongside the excellent Megalithic portal, is to use an OS map to find places of potential interest.

A quick look on Streetmap (that includes the 1:50,000 Landranger) identifies a couple of prospects - such as the Stone Circle here http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=323500&y=870500&z=120&sv=lossiemouth&st=3&tl=Map+of+Lossiemouth,+Moray+[City/Town/Village]&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=map.srf

Look for Tumuli etc... but also get out into the countryside and walk the paths. You never know what you'll find.

most sweet the sight of the sun;
good is health if one can but keep it,
and to live a life without shame. (Havamal 68)
