Boardgames. Hnefatafl - Fitchell etc

Postby Dathi » 10 Mar 2010, 14:14

Greetings,

This story caught my eye.

A poster for a joint BBC and British Museum project showing the historic Lewis chessmen should not say they were made in Norway, a MP has said.

I've never heard about Hnefatafl (how would you pronounce that? Sounds like a sneeze!) but have messed around trying to make a fitchell set. Doing a quick search, I found this interesting post: http://www.indymedia.ie/article/95220

And this: Chess Games in Ancient Ireland

And this cool site: Irish Fidchell / Viking Hnefatafl http://tdbcelts.org/node/816

Somewhere I have a set of rules for similar games. Anyone know more about this?

CFN,
Dathi

You can buy a portable cloth board with rules, etc., here:

I have a set. They are generally unequal games (one side tends to win more), which is interesting in itself.

Which side? I would guess the defenders.

This is a nice set. Smaller than some, but it means the games are quicker! I make sure I play it at least every Lughnasadh...
