Gävle goat

Postby DaRC » 12 Dec 2011, 13:36

Ahh I don't know if anyone picked up on this but the saga of the Gävle goat continues this year. It only lasted 5 days! The saga of the Goat's survival since 1966 is interesting/funny...

What I find interesting about the Gävle goat is that it (potentially) provides that link between Thor and Santa, the pagan and the christianised Fathers of the Yule period:
Thor's chariot is pulled by 2 goats whilst Santa's sleigh is pulled by Reindeer - both being horned animals.
Both are known as a bringer of gfts and of having a large belly & beard.
Both have an association with Red - Thor for his beard and Santa (via Coca Cola) his clothing.
Most dear is fire to the sons of men,
most sweet the sight of the sun;
good is health if one can but keep it,
and to live a life without shame. (Havamal 68)
