Pagan sites within a few hours of Paris?

Postby skydove » 24 Jun 2009, 08:12

In July my family have been invited to stay with a French family 40 minutes east of Paris. Could anyone tell me if there are any interesting Pagan/Celtic sites to explore in this area
or within a few hours travel?

Greetings Skydove,

These two pages may be of general interest (they give a good overview and handy advice):

And dare I say it......
Parc Asterix has plenty of Druidy themes!

Zoom in on the map to the area between Sens and Troyes for PLENTY of ancient sites.

Plenty in Paris too. Louvre has much of interest: http://www.louvre.fr/llv/musee/alaune.jsp?bmLocale=en

A bit west is the National Archaeology Museum of Saint-Germain-En-Laye. Tons of ancient / pagan material.

Have a wonderful trip.

Thanks so much Dathi, I'll have a good look at the sites and places you suggested, I didn't know there was an Asterix theme park, sounds fun!

Don't miss Parc Asterix (esp if there are youngsters in your party), it is fun on many levels. http://www.parcasterix.fr/monde-la-gaule
As you can see from the French-only web site, this is the "National" theme park. It's clever, quirky and even has a "Foret des Druides" (fun photo op!).

Book online (cheaper), get there early, and plan to have lunch between 12:30 and 13:40 (not a minute later, or all the good stuff will be gone and the Chef away home!). The bookshop naturally has all the themed Asterix stuff you could wish for, as well as some material on the back-story of the books (Gauls, Druids & Romans, Fr history etc.).

Getafix, naturally, is to be found all over the place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recurring_ ... in_Asterix
