Names of planets

Postby Abfalter » 01 Apr 2012, 21:46

Hi,
Can folks let me know the names of the near planets in the Gaelic languages? And possibly other words related to such names? I am thinking similar to the four directions, as discussed in the Bards' Gwersi (with the word for North having the same root as the word for wrong direction etc. etc.
Are the Gaelic planet names actually distinct from their otherwise widely used Roman/Greek names?

Thanks,

Abfalter

Thanks, Lily, for the link.
In reading the article, I was glad to find that the Celts seemed to have built their houses using astrology. It's just a bummer that we don't have a complete Celtic astrological chart with the original names. It would be SO interesting what their concepts were...

This reminded me of an 2nd century Gaulish artifact found in the late 19th century called the 'Coligny Calendar' so I went to see if there was mention of any planets and no, there doesn't seem to be.
It gives the gaulish names, in Roman Script, for the:

Sun: SONNO
Months (Calender begins 46 days into our calender'): SAMON (also called MID SAM), DVMAN, RIVROS, ANAGAN, OGRONN, CVTIOS, GIAMONI, SIMIVIS, EQVOS, ELEMIV, EDRINI, CANTLOS
fortnight (14 days): ATENOVX
Their 13 month year: AMMAN
3 days with no moon: TRINoX SAMO sindiv (not sure which is moon I'd assume SAMO)

I'd love it if we came upon an astrological chart, or inscribed 'Antithikyra Device', of druidic origin that is this significant!

Hi Abfalter,
try Taliesins's Song of the Wind, he mentions the planets, this link goes to a translation, there's also the original for comparison I think.

I found a few old Irish astrological terms going through a few articles:

Horoscope: 'nemindithibh' Considerate-Sky-Studying
Leo (constellation): 'An Corran' Reaping Hook.
Mars: 'An Cosnaighe' The Defender
Mercury: 'Budh' Point of Fire
The Pole Star: 'An Gaelin' The Lit Path
The Milky way: 'Bealach na Bo Finne' The Way of the White Cow
Aries: 'An Rae' The Ram
Cancer: 'An Portan' The Crab
Leo (zodiac): 'an Cú' The Hound
Virgo: 'Oigbhean' Young Lady
Capricorn: 'Pocán' Goat
Sagitarius: 'An Saighead' The Soldier/Archer
Orion: 'An Selgaire Mhór' The Great Hunter
Belt of Orion: 'Buaile an Bhodaigh' Belt of the Enlightened
