Foxtail

Postby Kima » 02 Feb 2011, 09:12

"foxtail" he says
but the meaning escapes
me like a slippery fish.

after peering from
behind the tree
he deftly enters
my circle of light,
flames sprucing
in malicious eyes
like swift words.

fox sees
fox knows

foxtail.

I look I stare
open eyed
I search
yet I do not
understand.

fox
sees.
fox
knows.
foxtail?

fox rises and leaves
- clever shape in
grey fog darkness -
white tip
of tail
disappearing.

it is only
then I grasp

fox sees,
fox knows,

fox tells.

Thanks Golden Eagle. This is a Sacred Grove riddle and I'm glad I managed to write a poem based on its central pun.

I was wondering whether I should remove the lines:

it is only
then I grasp

They seem almost superficial and I like things to be as simple as possible. You might call it poetic economy
