An Irish Herbal - Créachtlus/Hedge Woundwort

Postby Abhaill » 11 May 2008, 13:02

Just a reminder, I am using Máirín Uí Chonchubhair & Aodán Ó Conchúir’s Flóra Chorca Dhuibhne (FCD), a study of the flora of the south western peninsulas of Ireland, as my source for the Gaelic text. If this is your first look at a thread called, 'An Irish Herbal,' please read the intro to the thread on Agrimony for a more complete explanation of this project.

There are two Woundworts (also known as Betony) in FCD, Hedge Woundwort and Marsh Woundwort, and I'll be translating both of them.

Créachtlus / Hedge woundwort aka Betony / Stachys sylvatica

Luibh chlúmhach bhréan leath-ard (0.3-1.2 m) ilbhliantúil, coitianta i sean-ghairdíní, coillte agus fálta, ó leibhéal na farraige go 250 m.

Gas: Bláfar, ceithre-chúinneach, díreach in airde, ag éirí as riosóm faoin talamh.

Duilleog: Croíchruthach, cíorach, clúmhach, rocach, bréan, le cos, i bpéirí urchomhaireacha.

Bláth: Iúil-Lúnasa; dearg-chorcra, i bhfáinní ascallacha ag déanamh dias dlúth foirceanta; neamhrialta (feic lch 25); cailís fheadánach chúigfhiaclach; coróinín le dhá liopa, cochall cuasach, slán, díreach in uachtar, agus liopa réidh trí-mhaothánach in íochtar; déghnéasach; ceithre staimín mhíchothroma; dhá chairpéal táite, stíl aonair; ubhagán uachtarach le ceithre mhaothán dhoimhne; pailniú feithide.

Dá réir seo, comharthaí ó Dhia ar an leigheas a bhí i ngach luibh ab ea a crut agus a dath. Toisc blátha na gcréachtlusanna (Stachys sp.) bheith lúbtha ar nós carráin agus dath dearg orthu b’shin leid go stopfaidís goin ó lann nó uirlis ar bith. Dearbhaíonn taighde an lae inniu go bhfuil tréithe frithsheipteacha sna hílí soghalaithe atá sna plandaí.

FCD, p 184

Happy reading, if you don't need my help with a translation! Otherwise, I'll get to work as soon as I can. :old:

In case you were wondering, here's a picture of Hedge Woundwort. I think I'll post links to this site for all the herbs we look at - the photographs are excellent!

Enjoy!
