I agree. Gaming addiction can seriously affect the "normal" life of a young person, not to mention the effects it may have on their developing mind.

I wonder how Internet addiction (to group boards, for example) affects the parents of children?

Texting is the thing we see as even more addictive, and dangerous.
The obsession with communication is even becoming a topic in politics. Every time a person gets into a car, is it good to open the cell phone and talk the whole time?
Internet gaming is just as bad. But this attacks a young mind, setting up behavior problems the child may carry for some time.

Why are "killing" games so popular?
I see it as a reactionary problem. One which is destructive. But any gaming gives no skill. There is a danger in our exposing youth to computers.
Past the games, it becomes a replacement for too many things.

Wow, I never realized how many things contribute to children becoming violent.

I think I read someplace that over 95% of all criminals drank milk as children. Maybe we need to ban milk because it's obviously linked to violence.

C'mon...spanking in the home or violence in video games or on TV does not automatically mean that a child will be violent. It's the whole atmosphere that the child is raised in, not the little nit-picky things.

- Is there a possibility that a child in a violent household will grow up to be violent themselves? Yes, I will admit that.
- Is there an equal possibility that a child who never recieves discipline from his/her parents will react violently to the sudden application of authority figures in the form of policemen, bosses, etc. because they were never taught to respect authority or to control their actions and emotions when they were children? Yes, beause lack of discipline when called for will do the child just as much disservice in the long run as too much uneeded discipline, no matter the form that discipline takes.
- Is there any one way to raise a child? No.
- Is spanking right for every child? No, Each child responds differently to different forms of discipline.
- Can spanking, when taken too far, be considered abuse? Yes.
- Is emotional abuse, or the witholding of emotional attachment, just as damaging as physical abuse? No, it's worse.

We're arguing one point among many that lay along the road of Parenting. Spanking is just one thing that may have a negative effect on a child. It may just as easily also have a positive effect. It is up to the parent to decide how to raise their child themselves, what forms of discipline to use, and when to use it. Not every parent can use the Time Out, Grounding or Removal of Favored Object techniques with effectiveness.

Each parent must find thier own style. My style differs from my wife's, and we try to present a unifed front when it comes to disciplining our children even though our techniques differ.

Absolutely, a spoiled brat who was never even given a harsh word, never spanked or had any discipline at all can become the worst demon seed you may ever see.
Each child is different, and some will be the best people ever, despite all of the abuse in the world, there is no real defined way to ever think all kids react the same.
Hitting kids is just wrong. But saying the prodding of a parent is "corporal punishment" isn't as black & white as murder, sex abuse or assault.
The issue goes two ways, and a demon seed kid will abuse, hit and even murder. No parent is a robot, so we have to take it day by day.
That is why "Superman" the elementary school principal said "one at a time" and had a track record better than anything a peer reviewed book could ever imagine.

Not really. If a parent carries 'discipline' to an extreme, the government has a right to get involved. For example, if I decided that chaining my children to a tree in the back yard was an acceptable form of discipline, do you think that it would be 'up to me' to decide that such action is okay and acceptable?

Every parent can do it if they learn the techniques. Of course, it's always easier just to be lazy, not learn anything, and just continue to hit instead.
