Movies about Classical Music and Composers

I love biographies and pseudo-biographies, esp movies. I ws reminded of this while listening to NPR on my way to work yesterday. A new movie, "Copying Beethoven" is out this year, though not yet available on DVD and probably will never sow here out in the sticks:

Ed Harris plays Ludwig van and Diane Kruger his copyist. It is about his later years when he was deaf. It looks good!

Another Beethoven movie, Beethoven's Nephew is fun, but on the B-movie side. There is another which I cannot remember.

What are your favorite movies about Classical artists and composers?

I think the most fun is Amadeus.

I once saw Amadeus performed as a play at Stratford, in Ontario, Canada, and it blew me away.  Megan Follows played Constanze and was absolutely outstanding (as you would assume her to be if you've ever seen her before).  Years later I saw the movie and was really disappointed with the way Constanze was played, compared to what I'd seen on stage.  Nevertheless, I really loved this story.  It was like nothing my sheltered, teen-aged, Baptist self had ever seen before. :-)  It has stayed with me a long time.

I think my favorite is Impromptu about Chopin, although in all fairness it's more about George Sand and Chopin. But it's a great movie and it's nice to see the relationship between Chopin and Liszt.

I also loved the movie Shine.
