New Discovery - another Englishman!

Listening to NPR (National Public Radio) this morning I heard the Phantasy Quintet by Vaughn Williams...

Super exciting!!

I am open to best recording suggestions.

I dont really know Vaughn Williams and only had "Six Studies in English Folk Song, for cello & piano" which is also wonderful.

What are the essential Vaughn Williams  works?

I just came across this topic. You might be interested to know that each year Classic FM (a UK radio program http://www.classicfm.co.uk/) has a poll of its members for the Classical Hall of Fame: the most popular 300 classical pieces. This year Vaughan-Williams "The Lark Ascending" topped the poll.

That's one of my favourites too. Also try one his most famous the English Country Suite (not sure of the title). The Antarctic Symphony is wonderful (one of his Film scores) and two I own: The Wasps, and Dives and Lazarus. You'll find much more on-line, good luck.  [/url]

Thanks for reminding me of this. I purchased his Phantasy Quintet which also included Quartets 1 and 2 all of which speak to me.

ArkivMusic.com (a great resource for research, though prices tend to be full retail) lists the following as his most popular works:

    Fantasia on Greensleeves (126)
Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis (68)
    The lark ascending (65)
    Symphony no 5 in D major (24)
    A Sea Symphony (18)
    London Symphony (17)

The numbers on () are the number of recordings in print. Gosh you forced me to buy 3 more CDs :D
