Zennor Zeal
And in the dance and on the waves
there is the glimpse, the lightest haze,
the key obscure, of fairy ways.
To watch this light, to dance all night
into the dark, deep down at heart
we seek the elf, we seek the self.
The ship skipped lightly, Genoa gently
filled with furtive, faint breath. Blowing the creek
now here, now there. Now tack, then smack the boom
across and steady, ready, read the waves.
Keep each sense aware for that lift of hair
that denotes fine fairy key notes playing
wind-song, light then long, saying "Keep sailing
westwards, homewards." Played in the key of Chi.
As sparks of light lift this blade, make it swift:
a scything Skiff that shears and shaves, dappled
dancing waves. The elven tune, freer flume
and prancing plane do not presume today.
So scan the surf, see the fairy waves
that twinkle almost tinkle, set a silver net
and fish the flame spark'd sea. Strain ear
to pluck Puck's peals above sea slap, sail shift.
Tidy, trim the chute and then away we'll
go. A leaping legendary Lugger
towed by a taut tricksy tugger
whose pipe plays a peal, just like the Zennor zeal.
Singing so, she below, we shanty round
swinging low, she bellows; a Selkie sound.
Riding high the riptide sighs and lets us blow,
turns the tide toward the fairy fellow.
Then the fairy flow subsides to a
diff'rent key. The merry melody is flown:
the twinkles trip ahead, alight is lit, aglow
we flit and then round headland, homeward thrown.
Yet in our head there is the thread we know,
the other sound that rolls around and reels
an elven round. The spell is cast, the flow
goes up the mast, then to our sail it fills.
So sweet land Lugger, safe to lubber's land.
Follow the fairy light, hear elf-wight's whisper
of pilot Puck's pearls cast across the creek's
rippling road. Homewards, turn, review the rays.
This day the way all harmony was played
brings to the boil all work and toil
then say, as such, "Thank you so much
for dancing light and heaven harmony'd."
There was the dance set on the waves
where we did glimpse, in almost ways,
the Ki obscure, the fairy ways.
We watch all night, we dance the light
wait in the dark, with happy heart
to find the elf and find ourself.
