Winter (Poem)

Winter (Poem)

Winter

Sometimes it feels like
it is always winter here
In our "snowy north"
as others call it
while they ask us, with sly smiles,
if we live in igloos, and use dogsleds
to get around.

I could move, I suppose.
Someplace warm, where
I could grow
Morning Glories instead of Marigolds
And not have to read about hockey
eight months of the year.

But here, there is a breathless anticipation
of the seasons change.
We are all watchfull eyes
for the first buds on trees,
And the last of the ice
flowing away down the river.

So I think I will stay
In my "snowy north".
Where the hoarfrost on the trees stands out
so clear against the cold air
it makes your heart hurt just to look at them
And the borealis dance over the fields in May
Calling me to remember
the joyus flow of life.

Excellent Padme. It shows that it is possible to bloom wherever we are planted. We only need to eyes to see.

How delightful!
I agree with Crow. Your poem teaches us to find the joys already present around us. A wonderful poem. Thank-you for posting it.

living in alaska myself, i can appreciate every word you have written. i had to grin about the igloos and dog sleds. have heard it all before. and i especially remember the delightful freeze of standing for hours in the bitter cold on my deck, bathing in the lights. the ladies always delight me to my core. it is why i moved back - the arora borealis.

thank you,
carragh

You make me want to move further north! Truly beautiful.

They ask if we travel by boat around here, we get that much rain! A lovely piece Padme, and as has been said, it shows just how much beauty there is in the world, if we just take the blinkers off for a while.

Nicely rooted, it just screams Canada!

If only I could read about hockey instead of soccer year round...<sigh>

I've never been to Canada but I can 'see' it in your poem - love it!

humor and heart - nice combination!

You described what i one day long to see Mee-gwitch for the glimpse of one day that i might see for myself. But in time i can reflect upon your words. :peace: :brnbear: :awen:

A wonderful 'Canadian's-eye-view', very evocative of a place I haven't seen. Thanks :maple:

Padme,

Last year I had morning glories on my balcony... but indeed, I'd rather the marigolds. I actually miss shoveling snow and the crunching of ice under my boots. Strange but true.

Thanks for this. It really takes me home.
