Moon Rising on Ragnarök

Image

Ragnarök is the Norse apocalypse, the end of the world. Heimdall will signal it by blowing on his mighty Gjallarhorn when he sees the sons of Muspelheim (a fire world) ride across the Rainbow bridge of heaven into Asgard (the home of the gods). It will be a viscious battle and many of the gods will perish. The moon and sun will be swallowed and the whole of the universe will burn. :-( But don't worry too much, eh, there will be some who survive to replenish the world after the terrible time.

This piece is fairly chaotic... my intent. The scene is well into the battle but just before the Moon is swallowed up.

chaos indeed - very reminiscent of the idea of Ragnarok. Nicely done!

So much to see in this, and chaos aplenty, indeed. Well have you captured the essence of the story!

WOW! I can see the conflict, but it draws me in! Wonderfully done!
Pay attention to the path, and learn the hard way.  The easy way is fun and entertaining, but you take away very little.

Greetings Jeb!

An imaginative work colourful and dramatic. I think I see ambiguous figures in robes lurking behind the colours, deformed and monstrous.

Doesn't have anything to do with Stuart Gordon's film Dagon does it, by any chance? - the one based on H.P. Lovecraft where humans turn into fish monsters and worship evil underwater god Dagon?

Looking at this, it does actually strike me as being a bit Lovecraftian!

Was Lovecraft inspired in any way by the story of Raganarok and the end of the universe?

Hi Gandalf,

Actually, I've only ever read one Lovecraft story (two, if you're among those who count the Necronomicon as a Lovecraftian fiction  ) and have never seen a Lovecraft based movie. So it's just a nice coincidence if the art invokes Gordon's images for it's not my intent.

I was under the impression that Lovecraft was inspired largely by Sumerian mythology. But I'm not exactly familiar with his work, I so shouldn't really be commenting.

I think I see ambiguous figures in robes lurking behind the colours, deformed and monstrous.

Greetings Jeb!

Yes, there are specific scenes in the movie Dagon (which I have not yet had the fortune to see) - a selection of photos can be found at http://www.moviefans.de/a-z/d/dagon/

Click on the monster image on the right-hand of the screen. You'll get a collection of stills. Use the buttons to scroll in either direction - I believe you'll need to go forward to get to the various shots of the monsters (there are a lot of stills).

Happy hunting! Maybe it will inspire your next work...? :fear:

Also, you may want to check out the work of artist J.K. Potter. Very strange.

Greetings all!

The more I look at this picture, the more I keep seeing - there are faces in it everywhere - eyes staring at you - fishes, lizards, mutants and aliens. It is just getting stranger and stranger with every repeated viewing!

I'm almost certainly going to be voting for this work in the Art section unless something much better turns up! I may even try to save/download it so that I can look at it further...

Wow.

Thanks everyone for the great comments!

Thanks Gandalf for the Dagon link. Very creepy stuff indeed. I'll be sure to check out Potter too. I'm really glad to hear you like it!

Its certainly swallowed me up. I agree with Gandalf on this, there are so many indecipherable images within it.

Way to go.
