Yavanna's prayers

Yavanna's prayers

Postby Luscinia » 01 Oct 2004, 14:24

The following poems are part of a story called Fangorn’s Tale, where I tried to reconstruct the full story of the oldest Ent; I thought they might fit in here.
I hope you like them.

Yavanna’s prayer at the awakening of Fangorn

Dear oaken tree
I waken thee
To come and do my bidding
To be my guard
Oh, generous heart
Protect what’s seen and hidden!

Withdraw thy roots,
Thou’ll need no boots
Arms will be thy branches.
And mossy hair
All green and fair
Will grow down to thy haunches.

Dear oaken tree
I waken thee
To care for all my creatures
To be my guard
Most noble heart
Elves will be your teachers.

Fangorn lived on for many centuries, during which he lost his love Fimbrethil. It was predicted that they would only meet again when they had lost everything else.

This is Yavanna’s prayer when she set Fangorn free from her service, and his heart flew home to the Blessed Realm, where he was rejoined with Fimbrethil under the eaves of Irmo’s forest.

Dear oaken tree
I silence thee
To go and meet thy destiny
No pain no more
Nor dire gore
I free thee from thy duty

To Valinor
Immortal shore
Now, come, and do my bidding.
Go home dear friend
To ancient land
No longer is it hidden.

My oaken tree
I silence thee
To find what thou are needing
Oh, gentlest heart
So long apart
It is no longer bleeding.

Blessings

Lovely. I like this very much....do you have more? My favourite stories are from The Silmarilion have you made any poems from those stories? One about Beren and Luthien would be great! Now there's a thought!

Hi SpringArrives,

I’m glad you liked my poem.
I’ve not written any other poetry relating to Pofessor Tolkien’s stories; what I did so far was writing a story about Fangorn in prose.
I also love the stories from The Silmarillion, and I think the tale about Beren and Lthien is one of the most beautiful romances ever written.

It would be quite a challange to put it into verse (and, of course, you already have an extract of the ann-thennath in chapter XI of FotR; the Tolkien Ensemble has set it to music).

Well, I might try....

Blessings
